I have the initial CD release, which I gather is quite different from the original. I keep promising myself to get another copy.
You may have to do a little research, but I would recommend that 2017 mono hires version. Having been recorded in 1957 and released the same year, it is likely that the album was initially released in mono only (I am not absolutely sure of it). Miles apparently did some overdubs to correct errors or too improve his solos and likely focused on the mono tapes.
From wiki:
The album was originally recorded at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio on May 6, 10, 23 and 27, 1957. On August 22, 1957, Davis re-recorded material to cover or patch mistakes or omissions in his solos using overdubbing. The fact that this album was originally produced in mono makes these inserted overdubbings rather obvious in the new stereo setting.
An absolute steal at 7digital. A 24 discs collection at just over 10 euros instead of the 355 euros on Qobuz. Recommended…
Slightly off-topic, but eClassical has a Black Friday weekend discount of 50% off downloads for returning customers.
