What’s the last movie you saw in the cinema

I wasn’t setting my expectations too high with this one but for me to watch a 2.5hr long movie and never once look at my watch or shuffle uncomfortably says quite a lot for me. A future classic I believe. Just let your imagination go.

The Alec Guinness version I hope, though I prefer Smiley’s People

Will be going. Read the book a while back and enjoyed it almost as much as The Martian, certainly better than Artemis.

Saw it this afternoon. I did check my watch a few times and thought it too long. But, on balance, recommended.

Just back from watching it and I thoroughly enjoyed the film. The gradual reveal of the back story worked really well. As good as the Martian and better than Ad Astra.

Watched Project Hail Mary today and was quite impressed, 7/10 for me. As with much (apparently) Sci Fi you have to suspend your knowledge but I enjoyed it even though I would describe it as a ‘Bro’ film in the way friends across the pond like. Don’t want to give the game away but loved the second character in the space craft. Would like to have been a fly on the wall when they argued about the characterisation, appearance etc.

caught it yesterday, definitely a ‘bro’ film in a sci-fi setting. Does not need the big screen so worth looking out for when it arrives on amazon if you miss it in the cinema. Enjoyed it and thought the length was ok, a one bag of popcorn and some sweats would keep you going for the whole film.

100%, and for me SciFi is all about being lost in a world of amazement.

This had that and more, much more.

I’m a big fan of this story arc - similar to Moon and The Martian story lines which I loved so much.

Prob the best SciFi I’ve seen in the last 5 years or so.

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man

My wife insisted we go and see Operation Hail Mary yesterday and I was expecting a mildly entertaining sci-fi bro movie with full on goofy Ryan Gosling charm. But, oh my, what a thoroughly entertaining and well made film. The 2 and 1/2 hours zipped along and it was , by turns, tense, funny and very moving. Have to confess I had damp eyes a couple of times. Highly recommended

Off to watch it this week.

I hope you enjoy it. Tarkovsky it ain’t - it’s far more entertaining

I just tried to watch Project Hail Mary. I haven’t been to the cinema for a few years because I struggle to concentrate because of all the noises other people make. There were people with the usual crisp packets but also people with pizzas and even dogs. There was so much background noise I felt like I was going to explode and walked out after about 30 minutes. I found the whole experience very stressful. I love films and used to go to the cinema regularly pre covid but I think this will be my last cinema trip. My partner and friends are still in there. I don’t understand how they manage to tune out all the background noises!

I can sympathise - I watched the film in an Everyman cinema (my wife gets free tix from somewhere) and it’s like watching a film in a bloody restaurant

Edit - I hope that there is a special place in hell reserved for the popcorn eaters. They make it last the whole length of the film including the obligatory 15 minutes at the end scrabbling at the bottom of the carton for a tiny piece of popcorn

The thing that I hate most at the cinema is the never ending run of commercials at the start. I never watch adverts at home, using time shifting to skip them. At the cinema I use my noise cancelling headphones to shut out the intrusion and listen to some music instead. Being retired, we usually go to early afternoon midweek showings when the place is fairly empty.

As a perk for having Sky Cinema on TV, we get two free tickets per month to the Vue cinema. They have recently upgraded their seats. Plenty of space and electronic controls. Very comfortable.

Off to see Hail Mary tomorrow.

This suggests you accidentally booked a relaxed viewing? Anything but.

I like the Manchester Everyman but… yes.

I also FF to avoid at home but in the cinema I just find it far less stressful to just treat it as part of the occasional experience.

I like the staff at Everyman and clearly they have found a business model that works so good luck to them. My favourite is Picturehouse

My partner and friends really enjoyed Project Hail Mary. I just had a coffee and a nice walk around Knutsford in the rain instead! I’ll watch it when it’s on streaming

One of the benefits of being retired is the midday silver screen option… more often than not the screening is only 15% busy so very little audience noise and options to move seats if required.

On Friday I accompanied my granddaughter on a school trip to see Pets on a Train. I’m not sure what the educational value was - I think the teachers were just winding down before the Easter holidays. Although herding a horde of eight year olds on and off buses in South East London is not vey relaxing.
