What to update next with LP12

Radikal-1 - 2 is a fundamental upgrade.
The upgrade in no uncertain terms a no brainer.
The improvements going to the Klimax Case was great but 1-2 is a different box of technology completely.
Even the motor itself has been redesigned and the bottom of the motor machined to remove the section that in very rare cases touch the Trampolin foot inside.
The rad 2 motor now has metal threaded inserts for the mounting screws instead of the previous fitting of screw into composite material.

The results are easily audible.

With some very special dealer :wink: offers available now there hasn’t been a better time to upgrade while these are available. :+1:
The Utopik Miniline PS also ensures long term support and avoiding box obsolescence for the machined previously known as Klimax case.

Better not hear the Radikal 4 and super Bedrock. On their way. 100k well invested.

The Radikal 4 uses a super fast rubicon clock to control the exact speed. The Bedrock is reinforced with duralium inserts.

Looking at the full spec in your profile, if it were mine then the obvious weakest link is the sub chassis. Now might be great timing to find a good value pre loved Kore (maybe even a Keel?) as these trickle down the chain from folk at the top trading in for Keel SE. A Kore would make a very nice addition and keep your deck nicely in balance.

Thanks @KJC… I’m going to be doing that. I’ve just always had the doubt that a kore can’t be much better than the majik as it’s essentially the same chassis, except an alloy arm board glued to it. How much better can that really be?!? Either way, I’ll be finding out very soon! From experience, what effect on the sound does a glued on arm board really make? I get that the keel is made completely differently, so assume this will be much better, but just can’t see how the kore can be much better than majik. More than happy to be wrong, I guess I’ll find out!

Yes, the underpinnings if I can use that term of the Kore and Majik all the same. However, the increase in rigidity provided by the machined metal arm board makes such a big and very clearly audible improvements to the sound and this is always been the case with the better bearings like Cirkus and Karousel. You will hear the improvements very easily. The problem is however, often these two subchassis cannot be compared directly to each other with every other component on the LP12 being exactly the same. So, having two otherwise identical LP 12s allows one to show the differences to anyone when required. Single variable comparisons are ideal but practically are often very difficult to achieve, since you need a significant number of in this case LP 12s.
Given that you have an Ittok that requires a hole to be drilled into the arm board, most owners stick with the Kore until such time as they have an arm upgrade like the Audio Origami PU7 or Ekos as a Keel left with a hole in it if you were to upgrade your arm after the subchassis might not be desirable to you. Certainly a lot of owners don’t like the idea of a hole being left in the middle of their arm board.:blush: KR, Peter

Yeah, I’ll definitely take your word for it being better. My assumptions are literally baseless, having never heard one… and I’ve not been disappointed with any changes that I’ve made to the LP12 yet and can’t imagine I will be.

Yeah, I would definitely love a keel, but know I’ve got to sort the arm out too, so it’ll be a more significant investment when I do that. There’s not a chance I’d ever drill a keel (though I know you could work around that) as we discussed the last time I was having my cartridge fitted. But, it’s definitely one for another day!

I went from standard to kore and it was an obvious revelation and reckon it must be about 65% of a previous keel performance.

Going to go with a kore and update the Radikal 1 to a Radikal 2. Hopefully this will be noticeably better and give me a good reason to re-discover my album collection all over again!

I think it’ll be a recommendation of the Rad 1 to Rad 2 @loki. Seems like that is the most fundamental after doing the karousel. Can’t imagine how it could make that much difference as it is just spinning a record and the Radikal is hardly a slouch at that. But, sounds like it makes a significant difference to the sound, so this seems the best way to go for my system.
