thatās the plan!
The only comparison Iāve made is between a Naim UnitiServe and a Synology NAS running MinimServer. I considered the Synology to be better.
Iām never going to suggest that you cannot get dedicated servers that will outperform a NAS, but itās certainly not the case that a dedicated server is better by default.
Heavens you must have a guilty conscience wasnāt even thinking of you.
Please donāt take it personally.
Is this the innards of a NDS?
Anyway, fabulous build and design
Yupp
Fantastic. Iām sure you are going to enjoy it.
I never got to hear a NDS as my rack couldnāt take the extra power supply.
I had the original ND5XS and loved what it did.
Good listening times ahead!
Iām not worried at all, it just seemed a rather odd statement for you to make. Itās like saying that everyone who believes a standard ethernet cable is just as good as an uber expensive one doesnāt know what they are talking about. After all, the reviews sing their praises. Itās all a matter of opinion. Whatever, Iām happy with my NAS. All a posh server is is a NAS in a designer frock.
I have a QNAP NAS device and have wondered how it would compare to a Core as a server with SSD? Seems an expensive option.
I canāt speak to whether a NAS or dedicated server is better. I had an older Synology NAS and shut it down. I didnāt use it for anything else but digital music files, but I got tired of attending to it constantly, to keep it up to date with constant security patches. I really prefer an appliance that doesnāt need babysitting.
Now I use a Intel NUC running Roon ROCK. Since itās an appliance Roon takes care of updates. All I have to do is click a button to restart the server when prompted in the Roon controller (i.e. end user UI).
Lot quieter Stephen and a dream to use. My favourite piece of Naim kit. Love it.
An equally odd statement, if I may say.
I actually agree that my (QNAP) NAS gave my old UnitiServe a run for its money. In the end I just favoured the UnitiServe.
But swapping out my UnitiServe for a āposhā Melco was a bit of an eye (ear?) opener. To say a posh server is a NAS in a designer frock is certainly not my experience.
Hi,
a new entry at home: nd5xs2.
a second hand equipment -only 1,5 years old- that was offered to me by the local dealer at a really reasonable price.
at the moment used only for the web radio ā¦ i have to learn everything about streaming.
Be careful before buying it. I find it not specially easy to use. Every month thereās a new thread about the Uniticore, people asking how to do that, or thatā¦And each time @davidhendon comes to rescue.
I remember that you are not a computer guy, like me.
You can take a look at Innuos, more friendly to use I think.
FR, you have a Core? What was it you found difficult? It should be very simple and straightforward to use (even I can use one and Iām more a vinyl and tape guy and certainly no computer whizz!) so long as you do things the way it was designed to do them. Thereās now a fairly comprehensive FAQ on here coving most potential issues.
Gee Iāve plugged mine in loaded my music up and completely forgotten about it. It just works without fail and streams seamlessly to all three of my devices.
Have you owned one?
My Core runs troublefree (famous last words!), and with good recordings provides excellent sound. My difficulties largely revolved around poor and inconsistent metadata from downloads, not Naimās fault. These problems still exist, but when I buy a new recording I edit it on my mac using either Metadatics or Jaikoz before copying it across to the Core.
The Core is probably the easiest to use and best sounding ripper out there. I compared it to the Melco a few years back which has the worst UI and terrible sound by comparison.
I said that because very frequently people ask how to transfer music, change metadata, use music folder or download folderā¦ā¦albums cover not appearing, necessity to rebuild the memoryā¦ā¦
You shock me FR. Canāt believe how easy it is to use. And Iām somebody who struggles to set the timer on the oven. Best piece of kit in my system.
I find that occasionally happens when my internet is running slow or an album has a huge number of reissues with different covers, but there are several options of how to correct. All easy.
