Richard Hawley: A conversation with Steve Lamacq.
Amazing night at the 300-capacity Rose Theatre, Kingston and stark contrast to the 89,999 people I was with for OASIS at Wembley on Sunday.
The chat with Steve was brilliant and I could have quite happily listened to that all evening. Some great stories and anecdotes, the one about Lisa Marie Presley was the funniest.
The acoustics were second to none and we managed to nab the set list from the sound engineer afterwards.

By accident, just found on YouTube, Andy Sheppard playing with John Martyn, Jules, John Giblin etc. Playing " May you never". Brilliant. 30 odd years ago?

Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, Halle Orchestra with their new principal conductor Kahchun Wong playing Elgar Cello Concerto and Rachmaninov Symphony 2. My friend and I thought the Rachmaninov absolutely tremendous. Need to book in for the orchestra and conductor return to Nottingham in February. We are fortunate to get this quality of live orchestral music in Nottingham.
Next up is 33rd wedding anniversary gig with my beloved at Symphony Hall on Saturday with Diana Krall.

All Floyd at the Electric Palace, Bridport, this evening. Nice to hear that music played by a decent band in a smallish venue. Then on to the Woodman just down the road to catch a set by Victor Vector, local turntablist of renown. Fun night.

Tom Smith (of Editors) playing almost solo and acoustically at Bakewell Town Hall as part of a tour before the release of his solo album in December.
Tom is not the chattiest of front men and it was somewhat incongorous to see him flashing ‘devil horns’ between songs! Only familiar with three of his new songs but ‘Northern Line’ was particularly impressive. Lovely show - probably 180 people in the full venue and a great opportunity to hear his baritone voice without the full band.

I basically attended this concert for Pergolesi program which is rare to be played at the Orchestra Hall.
It was well worth the pain of sitting through above two new programs by Simon and Musgrave. Adagio of Strings was sounding great better than any of the recordings I own. Musically cooler than, say Lennys set.
Daniela Cancilari was te conductor whome I am not at all familiar with. Soprano Giula Semenzato made a CSO debut. She started out a bit stiff but gradually she came on her own with subtleties and expressive delicate delivery. Only regret for Stabat Mater was that I wish the musicians used pierod instrument. Specifically I love the sound of gut strings over modern strings used in violins for Baroque program.

It was a beatuiful night in downtown Chicago. Not at all like what I have seen in the recent local news. No ICE. No National Guards. No riots. Perfect temperature. No wind.

Marshall Gilmour Webbs. I spent two nights in my local jazz club seeing this delightful grouping formed out of David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange Tour Band. The absolutely amazing Webb Sisters, highly talented Louise Marshall and David’s daughter Romany. It was loads of fun and great music making

I recently saw Herb Alpert in Winnipeg at a 400 seat heritage theatre. The man is 90 years plus, but still ably playing his trumpet, although assisted by a much younger trumpeter on the high notes. His band was stellar and definitely having a great time as they ran through the hits, including his Disco Era triumph “Rise”. He sat on a stool throughout, but was otherwise very animated and engaging. He told tales of both the Tijuana Brass and his legendary record label A&M. There was even a segment where his wife Lani Hall came out to sing a medley of hits she had with Sergio Mendes.

Sir Andras Schiff at the Wigmore Hall in London last night. As ever, there is no set programme but he played a mostly Schubert set ( main piece was the Fantasy Sonata) and the Six Bagatelles by Ludwig Van.

I really like Opeth live, their level of musicianship is truly outstanding considering how technical a lot of their stuff is. Their ability to switch between full on death metal to almost silence never ceases to amaze me.
