Michael Buble at OLG stage in Niagara Falls last Sunday.
Epica and Amaranthe rock Hammersmith Odeon, 24th January. An excellent evening of female fronted rock/symphonic metal with support from the also enjoyable, ex-Delain Charlotte Wessells.
@Richard.Dane The Zemlinsky is a wonderful piece, and the influence of the Brahms Clarinet Trio is very much in evidence. The latter will be on the new recording, along with the Beethoven.
Nicolas Meier Trio in a small venue in Guildford.
Nicolas (on guitar) has recorded on the Naim label and still performs regularly around the UK jazz scene.
BBC Introducing at Nottingham’s Metronome. 4 new acts, 4-6 songs each. Tickets £0.00. Very good sound. Highlight was the oddly named but hugely talented Rainbow Frog Biscuits.
We saw Claire Martin and Laurence Cottle at the Spring in Havant earlier this evening. Laurence is the most amazing bass player and also plays the trombone. We were right at the front, which is always good.
Anna von Hausswolff at the Electric Brixton last night. Sooooperb. Wow.
A lovely atmospheric first act by a Japanese singer (couldn’t make out her name over the PA) using her pure voice against and with fragile/gritty electronics:
Anna and her band.

Stunning show… the Iconoclasts album was played pretty much entire. I’d hoped Iggy Pop might turn up, but…no matter - a great, great evening.
The sax player was excellent - he’s either got phenomenal reed skills or there’s some heavy electro treatment in there!
A very groovy night that we’ll repeat as soon as she’s back on the boards again. Heavy and compelling you bet!
Last night having an enjoyable evening watching The James Hunter Six at Storey’s Field Centre Cambridge, which is a new venue, intimate and very good acoustics.
Lumos quartet playing Mozart and Vivaldi in the church of St Cross in Winchester. The church was built in 1135 and provided a very atmospheric backdrop lit solely with candles.

A weekend on my own so I took a chance yesterday on a composer I knew nothing about at the wigmore hall in London. Enjoyed the music very much, although clarinet and piano didn’t get me too excited. A bit bland. The string quartet and septet were really well played and I may explore the music of Kaufmann a little more.
I saw them at the Leas in Feb 1997
Lucinda Williams in Glasgow last night.
Great gig despite Lu coming on stage at the start to let us know that Doug Pettibone had left for a family emergency leaving Marc Ford as the sole guitarist. I was kind of worried that this wouldn’t be a good show - but how wrong I was ! Mr Ford did an absolutely top- notch job, improvising to cover lead and rhythm roles really well - what a great guitarist.
Despite appearing really frail (being helped on and off the stage) Lucinda’s voice was really good and she was on good form. Rhythm section of David Sutton (bass) and Brady Blade (drums - Brian’s brother!) were superb.
They played most of the new album and a good selection from her back catalogue, ending with a barnstorming version of “Keep on Rocking in the Free World).
Tortoise, RBB Sendesaal, Berlin.
Nearly „no show“, but very good concert. Brillant music, especially interesting due to 2 drumsets face to face upfront.
They play Berlin again:
Columbia theatre in april, recommended!
Last Friday, Ese and Pharoah playing a duo gig at the Friend At Hand pub nr Russell Square…a selection of oldies with a couple of Vooduu People songs in for the ride. Great pub, will go back. Great gig!
Made a few new fans judging by the enthusiastic responses…
And opposite the Friend, the Horse Hospital - a centre for the avant-garde arts. Got to check that out in the near future.
What ever happened to the “new” album that was spoken about?
Short answer is - I think it was/is delayed because of sheer lack of funds to press etc, but it’s hopefully still viable… when is a moot point.
Ese and The Vooduu People don’t make much money, sadly, despite how much they wow audiences at every gig.
It’s a pity we no longer have the Pledge Music platform. I’d happily front up the money to get a copy of the new album.
Let’s hope it’s not one of those albums that gets left on the shelf.
Thanks Steve, thought it might be that.
