What was the last concert / gig you attended?

Tortoise in Hamburg.

Great Band, much fun, super music but mushy sound.

Way inferior to the Berlin Show months ago.

But was fun, too!

Tori Amos rocks Newcastle City Hall.

Jethro Tull on the opening night of their latest tour, at Perth Concert Hall. It was my first gig at this venue and it had a fantastically clean, punchy sound. The drums especially, sounded fabulous. I last saw Ian Anderson 14 years ago - his voice was ‘interesting’ then and it was more so tonight. But given he is nearly 79, all can be forgiven. A good mix of old and new with some of the old songs done with some improvisation which, I felt worked rather well. All in all, a most enjoyable evening.

Cheers,

Ian

delightful and intimate concert from these two.

Yep, the final song of the evening with a wonderful new arrangement in the middle section, that I really liked.

I might as well be in Vienna - still considering as it’s requiring overnight stay etc…

Yeah it takes longer to get there now but we are extending the trip beyond Vienna. And hoping to stop by at Steinbach am Attersee on the way to Vienna. ( pay homage to Mahler )
If you decided to go maybe we can meet up there.

On Sunday I was at the Wigmore Hall (London) for Beth Taylor (mezzo) and Hamish Brown (piano), a programme based around water. I largely went for the Elgar Sea Pictures, but was delighted to hear a composition from a 20/21 year old composer Cameron Biles-Liddell among some shorter pieces. This wasn’t a masterpiece, but was very well written and enjoyable, a talented young composer to watch.
Likewise the artistes were young, she was in competitions in ‘18 and ‘19 so I’d guess late 20s. He’s a very fine accompanist, she has a fantastic voice and technique.
I enjoyed the first 4 pieces before they finished the recital with the Elgar Sea Pictures. This was a bravura performance, my usual version of this piece is Janet Baker with Barbirolli and the LSO (other side of du Pré’s Elgar concerto). Taylor’s voice is a bit richer and rounded than Baker’s, she certainly has the power and stamina required for the third and fifth movements, and the interpretive skill to make the poetry meaningful. It was a wonderful piece of singing with superb piano support. A young singer to watch, the duo have a debut disc due later this year, I’ll be looking out for it.

Eric Clapton at GLive in Guildford, Surrey. Small 1,000 seater venue. Just sublime. Such an intimate setting, I felt truly privileged to witness it.
