No Chet Baker then or Miles Davis or John Coltrane or Bill Evans or Lee Morgan or Charlie Parker or Billie Holliday or Fats Navarro or Keith Richards or Eric Clapton or Janis Joplin. What about Alcoholics like Dexter Gordon, Bobby Timmons, Paul Chambers, Adele, Lana Del Ray, Elton John, Jon Bonham, Ozzy Osbourne, Shane Macgowan, David Bowie or Alice Cooper do they get in the collection.
Utterly absurd stance! Do you also dismiss vast swathes of literature, art and film based on the fact that someone involved may have taken “drugs”. A shining example of the kind of attitude that has put us in such a mess with regards to drug policy. Ignorance and fear! Anyway I could go on for ages about this but this is probably not the right place to do so.
Stay cool and safe in the heat everyone!
I was considering the Craft version but following your post have ordered a copy from a very reliable dealer on Discogs (VG+) for £14 including postage.
Certainly worth a punt at that price!
Thanks Richard ![]()
I can assure you if you many any drugs, you’re missing out on some fantastic artists!
Bowie, Pop, The Buckleys, Zep, The Who, Beatles, Floyd, Drake, Genesis, Marley, Dylan, Reed & probably all the greatest Jazz artists and that’s just off the top of my head!
Your loss I suppose.
Not to mention just about every film you’ve ever seen. Noel Coward, Fred Astaire, et al.
Oh dear, that is very disappointing. Here’s the photo of the scratch which I sent to Jessica. The scratch looks white in the image, just above the shadow of my iPad. Is this the one? I also have a video of the eccentricity, but that’s too difficult to post here.
Actually, thinking about it a bit more, I think I had taken the cellophane off completely, so it might be a different copy with similar issues.
I’m fascinated by the powerful effect his autobiography had on you, causing you to turn away from Art Pepper‘s music with such force. Sadly, I can’t order this from my library, but I’d like to risk reading it since (as mentioned up-thread) I’ve only recently been diving in to this great artist (thanks, perhaps absurdly, to the TV drama Bosch).
The review quotes certainly align with your own reaction, saying it’s powerful, honest, cathartic, unyielding… My favourite review quote (from James Yardley, per Wikipedia):
“it is my hunch, […] or perhaps more accurately my hope, that sooner or later it will come to be recognized as a work of commanding power, withering candor and raw artistry – certainly the best of the many jazz autobiographies, and much more than that”
Glad to infer that you’re getting over your reaction from 1980 and welcoming this great playing back into your collection once more.
If it’s something members would like to discuss in depth then it’s probably worth a dedicated thread to avoid too much diversion on this one.
Thanks Clive, scratch looks the same. If you completely removed the shrink then odd that the scratch is identical. I guess its posdible the stamper was scratched.
Ive already sent a stern email suggesting she misled me and sold me a faulty returned item. Did you return your copy?
Annoys me that I jumped to PP’s defence when you reported your problem with them.
Oh well…
Ive heard a lot of good comments about this drama, started watching the first episode series one last night
McCoy Tyner’s The Real McCoy; another excellent Kevin Gray cut in the Blue Note Classic series. I ordered this one when it first came out but was accidentally sent the earlier issue. When I sent it back it was too late to send the right one, as all were sold out. I searched hard for another copy in vain, so delighted it was recently repressed.
At a dealer demo and the voices were incredible👍
That’s good to hear mine is waiting at the Post Office.
Is this a verve pressing? I have the Analog Productions pressing, which is also wonderful.
It’s the new Acoustic Sounds Pressing so from the same stable as the AP version which I only have Disc 1 Sides A+B of so I have ordered this new version to complete the set I’m not sure if it’s pressed from the same remaster although unlike your AP this is a single LP cut at 33rpm.
I will pick it up tomorrow and compare the two well Side 1 at least.

I have this album ”Cupid” from the french group Kat Onoma as a CD since the early 90’s but yesterday it showed up as the 1988 LP second hand. Never seen it before.
I had to get it. Nice copy as well. And their cover of Wild Thing is a great slow burner waiting for that drumbeat…
Strongly recommended. The books are excellent too.
