Toots Presents The Maytals (Chin Randy’s LP)

An interesting (to me anyway) curio

Repress of an album originally released in 1977. Toots isnt on it, theres some uncredited vocalists (members of the Maytals band?) Including a fine female singer on the opening Black Rose. But as expected from the musicians involved its quality music (mostly instrumental) credited to The Maytals (Jackie Brown, Rad Bryan, Hux Brown, Winston Wright and Paul Douglas) and produced by Warrick Lyn.

Cheep as chips too, but I got it for free no quibble after having a grumble about the creased sleeve. Top notch service from Juno as always

Out of the blue couldn’t resist - DC with Dollar Brand bassist Johnny Dyani and blow me Nana Vasconcelos on percussion. 1972 recorded double album of four long pieces. Sounds like the beginnings of DC’s world fusion explorations. Looking forward to this arriving courtesy of Juno’s always excellent service.

Record Fair haul from this weekend. A mixed bag in terms of quality…

The Beatles - Love Songs. 1980s repress. £20. EX (sleeve) / NrM (vinyl). According to Andrew Milton of Parlogram Auctions (Youtube channel), supposedly one of the better sounding Beatles albums out there, and it didn’t disappoint - sounds great, and in time warp condition too.

John Lee Hooker: The Healer. £16. First UK pressing. VG+/VG+. A little noisy between tracks and the quieter passages, but have read this issue can be a bit hard to find in minty condition.

Ry Cooder - Get Rhythm. £3. EX/M. And sounds tremendous too, all for £3!

Billie Holiday - Lady In Satin. £4. 1980s repress. EX/EX.

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly. £10. Mid 1980s repress with the blue inner liner. EX/NrM. One of those slack jaw, “Oh, this is what vinyl can sound like” moments, and this isn’t the first pressing or a swish ‘audiophile’ ltd edition pressing either, just a bog standard £3.99 Nice Price 80s reissue.

Slade - Slayed. £15. First UK pressing. Ex/EX. Nice to find in this condition, as most copies I’ve seen have been trashed.

Malcolm McLaren. £10. First UK pressing. NM/NM. Looks like its never been played, and a superb sounding record too.

The Beatles - Revolver. £40. Second UK mono pressing. VG+/F. Took a punt on this and crashed and burned I’m afraid. Lovely condition sleeve for the year, the vinyl looked a little dusty, but no scratches so thought it could clean up well. Even after three passes via the RCM and extended cleaning fluid soak times on the Okki, it still sounds rather poor, so I think it has rather bad groove wear. Hey ho, some you win - forty notes down on this non revolver, but it’ll look pretty on a shelf though.

Shame about the Revolver. I have a first press Mono With The Beatles that looks like someones ridden a speedway bike all over it but amazingly plays like mint, dead silent not a single click or pop.

Yes, just one of those things! I remember you mentioning your With The Beatles album in another post when I’d bought another Beatles Mono. Funnily enough, this is the complete opposite, it looks VG+/EX (I’ll post some snaps in a moment), and for the first couple of tracks on each side plays NrM, but then deteriorates dramatically as each side plays, so assuming some sort of inner groove wear. Snaps…

Tomorrows Warriors - I Am Warrior

Have posted this on the WYLT and Jazz threads recently, the stream has been on heavy rotation in anticipation of the gatefold 2LP that arrived this morning.

Nice compilation recorded live at the Jazz Cafe, showcasing the work of Tomorrows Warriors, supporting and nurturing fresh new Jazz talent. Proceeds from this “Limited Edition” are reinvested into the Tomorrows Warriors Trust.

Yeah from the photo it looks pretty good. Not teaching you to suck eggs, sometimes you can spot groove wear as a noticeable whiteness (if that makes sense) in the groove. Never mind, luck o the draw

Horace Parlan Quintet - Speakin’ My Piece, BN Classic Series (2023)

I have another copy of this excellent record from Blue Note The 4000 Series Collection produced by Toshiba in Japan and released in 1991. I bought the Classic Series for comparison and to see if KG’s new cut pressed at Optimal would be an improvement but even though the new reissue is excellent I think I prefer the Japanese copy.

There are issues with both that are very similar to the issues on Sonny Red’s Out of the Blue on certain passages the Sax sounds ever so slightly distorted like the sound you sometimes get from saliva in the mouthpiece though I think it’s more likely an issue with the original tapes.

Apart from that the sound is excellent with KG’s being ever so slightly ‘hotter’ than the Japanese pressing and also it sounds as if the bass is more pronounced I’d describe the Japanese version as slightly warmer which in this case I prefer.

During the 1980’s EMI/Toshiba took over reissuing Blue Note titles from King Records and it’s considered by collectors that the quality dropped of a little and it’s believed that EMI used copy tapes rather than the originals. It’s sure that they produced many, many more titles than King Records ever did but titles like this Horace Parlan where never produced by King Records anyway.

I bought this selection from the local record store as a birthday present for myself. It includes something from the period around my birth, the time I went to school, finished school and graduated from university. Didn’t find anything suitable for the later years, perhaps I manage to do that later

The pressing is superbly done. SQ is great.
This is what you should expect for 26 Euros. Hopefully the years of bad pressings find an an end.
