Wow! Obviously an original would be nice but I’m extremely happy with the Mole Jazz which cost me £10 at Southwold Record Fair. Tubbs Tours cost me a fiver from the excellent Five Rise Records (Bingley) at NW HiFi Show. Both sound great on my relatively modest system. I keep my eyes open for other Mole Jazz releases when browsing. I expect they all sound pretty good.
As Simon Spillett mentions in his superb Tubby Hayes biography, ‘Mexican Green’ sold in only small quantities at initial release and was deleted pretty quickly. Apparently, copies ended up in the Woolworths bargain rack in the early 70s and it was never repressed or reissued until Mole did their release.
There’s also the Japanese Fontana release from I think the 1990s but other than a good copy of the original stereo, which sounds superb, the Gearbox reissue from the box would be a more than adequate next best.
‘100% Proof’ actually got a reissue by Philips at mid-price in the mid 70s but that has a naff cover. Great album though.
The Gearbox box set is well worth getting hold of. I compared some of my original first pressings against the reissues and there’s little in it. I think it can still be bought for £200, which may well turn out to be a bargain in the long term…
Agreed!
And…snap!
Miles Davis - Milestones, Columbia (2013)
From the Miles Davis - The Original Mono Recordings series cut by KG at Cohearant and pressed at RTI.
Thanks for sharing this. Trying to broaden my music genre’s so always check in and try stuff from this forum and really liked this album!
If you can get a copy of this for me it’s one of there best great band might have to give them a blast at the weekend ![]()
Got this at the weekend been looking at it for a while now but finally decided to give it a go great album sometimes arriving at the party late is better than not arriving at all ![]()
One of my very favourite albums. The complete sessions were released on vinyl on Pure a few years back after his wife had released the sessions on cd. Both sets are worth having and the cd set was a very reasonable price if I recall.
Mole also released some Gil Evans records which I must dig out but remember fondly.
I have one of them - the ‘British Orchestra’ recorded live in Bradford I think. Got to see them on one of those tours at Ronnie’s - in the band were John Surman, Chris Hunter, Guy Barker, Frank Ricotti l, John Taylor, Don Weller, Henry Lowther (I think) and Ray Russell as well as Lou Soloff and Miles Evans from the States.
Gil tinkered away on the electric piano wearing a bandana doing his ‘arranger’s piano’. They played a number of his Hendrix arrangements.
Yes that’s correct and I’d dearly love the 7 LP Pure Pleasure set but it sells for between £300 - £500 on Discogs unfortunately it was a Limited Edition so probably not set for a reissue.
Stanley Turrentine - Easy Walker, BN/Classic Series (2026)
Such an excellent recording listening to McCoy Tyner playing Burt Bacharach’s ‘What The World Needs Now’ is a real treat. I was listening to Look Out earlier recorded by Stanley Turrentine six years before Easy Walker in 1960 with another excellent pianist Horace Parlan and on both there is a real soulfulness not the Hammond Organ driven Soul Jazz of Jimmy Smith but a slower much more melodic soul driven by Stanley Turrentine’s deep, fluid sax.
Got these three yesterday in the record shop absolutely over the moon with them and the corella one is signed copy bonus ![]()
