Where is the best place to sell gear?

I have some audio gear I want to sell. Years and years ago, I sold some Quad gear on eBay which went well, but now there is Audiogon, HIFI Shark and even Amazon, and maybe others I don’t know about. I am wondering which is the go to place to sell used?

My first thought is of course… “not here”, as forum rules prohibit sales or commercial promotion of any kind on this forum.

However, as to the wider question, I think much will depend on where you are and whether you are willing to ship items or would prefer to only sell face to face.

If it’s Naim or similar quality kit then there are a number of dealers who will buy - this can often the safest and most secure route - or else give good trade-in on new kit.

Ebay is still the best place to sell any used items.

Also consider the Pink Fish forum, its been a long while since I have been there but it was always a popular place to sell hi-fi gear.

Ah ha, I hadn’t heard of the Pink Fish Forum. I will add it to my list, thanks.

I recently bought something off Audiogon and it turned out well, but eBay seems to have better protection for buyer, so I’ve assumed that might be the better place to sell (and buy).

I am familiar with the forum and am aware there is no selling here. Just wanted some feedback because I have some things I should sell. I’ve been buying audio gear for decades and instead of trading in or selling I have kept it and as a result I have accumulated enough gear to populate four audio systems in my house. I have run out of rooms! Now it’s time to find a new home for some of my good gear.

I would expect to have to ship.

Much will depend on where you are located. Places such as PFM are very good for UK and Continental Europe, perhaps not so good for the rest of the world. In the US Audiogon seems to be very popular. Auction sites like eBay give you a world market.

Watch for scammers when selling Naim gear on eBay. I’ve had a couple of items won by buyers from overseas wanting you to send via an industrial unit or other third party intermediate. This leaves you unprotected by eBay.
Only ever send to the buyers home address fully tracked and insured. No exceptions!

On PF you need 50 posts before you can create an ad. Nice folks, mostly trustworthy people (is this a tautology?).

One issue with eBay is the costs you incur from all the fees, etc. Can really eat into your financial returns from the sale.

eBay’s fees are nothing compared to a regular auction house here you’ll be charged at both ends, usually around 20% + VAT for both buyer and seller.

Cash or Bank Transfer alleviates some of the costs.

They also increase the risk significantly, and reduce your protection as a seller. Fine if both buyer and seller can trust each other, but also the methods of choice used by scammers.

How does cash or Bank Transfer reduce seller protection?

I believe it, unfortunately, that there are crooks gaming the system, but what is an industrial unit or other third party intermediate?

It’s where the buyer wants you to send the item that is not their home address. They then collect the item and you have no proof that they ever received it so they can initiate a “item not received” refund request.

audio-markt de is quite good. It’s based in Germany but posts are Europe wide. The website is visually a bit dated but it does the job. Posting an ad costs a flat €4 and it remains online for 3 months I think. I’ve bought and sold a few things on there over the past few years.

HiFi Shark is actually just a search engine for second hand hifi sites.More useful when buying than selling.

Don’t forget things like local newspapers/freeads and even Facebook - they tend to be a long shot for specialist hifi, but if there is a buyer looking, could be the best way.

We do have a local community email forum. Sometimes it functions almost as a mini Craig’s list with things for sale or to give away, but I see very few electronics come on. But it’s a good suggestion and I’ll probably give it a try. Hadn’t thought of Facebook, but that’s another idea, thanks.

I recommend Audiogon. It’s 100% audio and so far as I’m concerned the best. Have a look at what it’s about and you’ll see. You should have a PayPal account to simplify things.

A dark corner of a pub :rofl::rofl:
