A few suggestions, which, however, refer to the vinyl records, the digital versions, which I also have, do not even offer a premonition of what is possible here.

  1. The McNeely-Levin-Skinner Band - After Midnight (Sheffield Lab)

Incredibly powerful and dynamic. Just try it.

  1. Gregorio Paniagua - La Folia (ATR Mastercut Recording)

There are different pressings, which are all quite good, but the ATR pressing is clearly superior to all others. If something is distorted, then it is most likely due to a wrongly adjusted or worn cartridge. And yes, from a musical point of view there exist better ‘Folias’ (e.g. by Jordi Savall).

  1. Wilhelm Furtwängler, Beethoven’s 9th (on Russian post-war vinyl)

This recording is from 1942, most of you will know the story: Concert at the AEG site in Berlin 1942, recorded on an AEG K4 tape recorder, which already had HF-biasing. To make a long story short, after the war the tape recorders were transported to the USA and the recorded tapes to Moscow, where they reappeared in the 1960s and vinyl records were pressed of them.

This is the Russian first pressing (2 LPs) on horrible Russian vinyl. The sound quality, especially the dynamics, is frighteningly good and shows what the recording technology was already able to do more than 80 years ago. No hi-fi in today’s sense, but this recording shows why so many people are concerned with the sound technology (speakers, amplifiers) from the 1930s and 1940s. Anyone who, like me, thinks that an old Moskvich can sometimes be more fun than a new - let’s say - Golf, will enjoy this recording.

There are a lot of pressings around, most are copies of copies of copies and sound boring, this one sounds great (again, we are not talking about hi-fi in today’s sense, it’s different, not necessarily worse).

I kew Lorne when he was just a wee boy. Used to pop out to his Dad’s studio. I doubt he would even remember me. It was in the days of Bryan Ferry, Ozzy and some other notibles recording there.

Just great vocals, telecaster and drums.

But I’d still rate it as a “sonically brilliant” album.

That’s cool! By the way he also composed some other great soundtracks such as The Crown.

Brilliant album but what you say is not true regarding showing off Linn equipment I am led to believe. It is just a myth. Do a little research.

Talk Talk - Colour of Spring
Peter Gabriel - So
Thomas Dolby - The Flat Earth
Van Morrison - Poetic Champions Compose

A friend has just given me this for my Birthday.
Beatrice Dillon - Work Around
The dynamics, extremes of frequency range and imagery are just completely absurd.
Definitely the most testing record I’ve ever heard.

I dug this CD out a few days ago and was blown away by the massive sound stage and startling effects. Certainly a good one test test out bass.

Amazing, and to my surprise also quite wonderful. I wonder how she expected that album to be consumed?
