I was considering an external PSU for my turntable. Having done a bit of research though it looks like I might get more of system improvement from an external power supply unit for my phone pre amp. I can’t add one to my amp. Do members here agree that the phono stage is where to start with a PSU?
Amp is a Naim Nait 5i
Phono stage is a schiit audio Mani
TT is a project essential 2 with a OM20 stylus.
Speakers(likely not relevant?) are Kudos Cardea 2.
Welcome Neil! The Naim mantra of using external PSUs to improve SQ is legion. I have found that the power supply on the deck made the most significant improvement, then the supply to the phono stage. I subscribe to the ‘garbage in=garbage out’ credo.
Rather than adding a PSU I’d be looking at a much better turntable. Something like a Rega 6 or 8 would be good. I’d also be slightly concerned that the amplifier isn’t up to the standard of the speakers.
Do note that the Schiit audio Mani wall-wart is simply an AC transformer, with the rest of the PSU in Mani itself. So it’s not something you can improve with a better PSU as it would be the case for a DC wall-wart.
I think those Cardeas are not that demanding, the 5si will do well enough, but completely agree about the TT, the Rega P6 particularly the new RS edition would be the game changer.
In time. I’m self employed and just back to work after being off for 9 weeks following shoulder surgery. I simply do not have funds right now for a Rega P6 or any similarly priced turntable. New or used. Even if I did there’s business needs that the money would be definitely better spent on as longer term investment.
Hence why I’m trying to tweak the maximum out of what I have at the moment.
The speakers work beautifully with the amp. I bought them on the bases that I knew they would and that they will last me a long time and work fine just fine with upgraded sources and amps down the line.
