Which transistor radio do you use?

WOW,
standard made my first int. amp and tuner along with garrard 40tt and libertyphone 100 (liberty store house brand). They were the manufacturers for sony/superscope & marantz iirc. One year later the amp fizzled and to look at it would have cost more than it was purchased for originally, so for the massive sum of $25 , I was able to “trade up” to a kenwood ka-2500 amp. As I recall the “list price” on the amp and tuner were $100 each but the package price lowered each to $70 and to just open it was $75 repair fee.

I always loved the design of Sony’s ST80 F tuner which my uncle had the dial used to light up a beautiful green colour.
Did any memebers own own and if so where they any good?

Never owned one, but I’m guessing it was typical sony. Up to the minute specs and worked perfectly adequately. Soon to be replaced by an even more up-to - date unit. Even would sound pretty good, until compared to units that did sound good. As much as I admired (and liked) sony especially for tvs, They were really much like the electronic equivalent of Mc’Donalds , who for more than 30 years really destroyed the hamburger. For years no one would compete, or if they did it was strictly by price.

Thanks Benjy your probably right just a bit of nostalgia though and I’m pretty sure they can be had relatively cheap nowadays.
My parents had a Sony TA 1130 amplifier and big Wharedale speakers back in the 70’s which my mum loved to crank up to all our embarrassment. I’d get off the school bus and cringe all the way home as ‘Hot Legs’ came blaring out of the windows.
A bit off topic but here’s a picture anyway.

It was more the ‘Hot Legs’ than the loud music.

3 Roberts radios one the kitchen, the other two in bedrooms. However main radio in my Hi Fi system since 1986 is a Nat 101 / Snaps the 101 had a full service at the factory in 2001 and the Snaps went to Class A this January.
The 101 is sublime such a beautiful unit would never think of selling. It’s tuned to BBC 4 most of the time or LBC.

When did radios stop being things of such beauty?

My elder sister got one of these for her 21st back in the late 60’s. I think she still has it, Telefunken Bajazzo TS. I was fascinated by it and I remember discovering Taxis could be heard down the end of the VHF band just below 88mhz

Always had a soft spot for Luxman- they always looked that little bit better and classier than others. Although, I think their performance was comparable to their contemporaries. I had yamaha cr-820 , and the tandbergs were as nice if a little more “garish” for lack of a better term.

Just an update - my zenith royal 7000 transoceanic is on the other side of this country (U.S.) being re-capped (sounds familiar) some transistors being replaced - zenith was still using sockets and plug-in for transistors, but radio was still point to point wiring, calibrated, and generally gone over. When finished, I will have a 10+ lb. “portable”. I’m not sure how portable it will be - I’m somewhat disabled and basically need hands available to walk - definitely no hoisting on my shoulder like the boom-boxes of the past. Plan to sit outside with it , but it is almost abusively hot every day now.

I’m looking for a nice Japaneses monster reciever.

The Technics SA1000
330 Watts per channel into 8 ohms so nearer 500 into my 4 ohm Dynaudios
A frequency response of 20hz to 20hz and just 0.03 total harmonic distortion and an MM phono stage for my Audio Technica AT150 EA.

My brother still has this from new, Trio KR77 from 1972.
Certainly not a monster, think it’s about 18w in to 8ohms but a classic nonetheless

Bobthe builder-
An even bigger japanese monster would be a yamaha cr-2020. I don’t have a pic, but someone else probably can post (or google it)

Very nice benjy
Not as powerful as the Technics but enough power at 105 watts into 8ohms and I have a feeling it would sound better. It also has both MM and MC inputs.
