Which turntable?

Hi all.

Looking for a used turntable, around £5k mark.

Any suggestions or advise please?

Thanks .

I highly recommend every turntable at about GBP5K stocked by your regular dealers.

Cheeky maybe. But I bet that gives your a manageable shortlist.

The Technics SL-1200GAE/SL-1210GAE would be my choice (Note GAE, not G). If there’s any change, spend it on a cartridge, phonostage or records.

I genuinely think you won’t find anything at that price, 2nd hand or not, that will truly better it. It’s exceptional value. But of course others might sound different in a way that suites you better.

LP12, obviously

We will all recommend what we have !

So Michell Gryo SE. A few tweaks or mods you can make. Not so many it is a hugely different TT at a large cost.

I haven’t. I recommended they shortlist from what they can actually buy. I bet that will be like three decks. Maybe 4 if they have more than one dealer.

I found one Vertere MG-1 turntable with SG-1 tonearm and PSU for £5k.

Personally I would go for that one. But there are lot of other great options as well: SME’s, Linn, Bauer, Kuzma, etc.

edit. It was MG-1 deck, not SG-1. Still would prefer it.

You don’t seem to be replacing a turntable but rely on streaming as your sole source. So why do you want a turntable, do you have lots of records? There’s lots on the forum already about whether to introduce a turntable as a new source and what to get - this thread will mostly just repeat people’s personal choices - as said above.

I would echo @CliveB … I bought a 2nd hand LP12 a few years ago after I had recovered my LPs from storage. I’ve hardly listened to them. I prefer the convenience of streaming, and the SQ does not match the streaming setup.

However, I did not pay 5k; rather less. Perhaps you will be satisfied and enjoy the music and experience?

I guess all turntables you pay £5k for used offer very good performance.
I use a Bergmann Magne. I bought it because I like the look of it. It plays very good as a bonus.

About ten years ago my dealer phoned me up and said “You must listen to this” and brought round a turntable that cost less than the last upgrade (the Keel) I’d had on my Archiv/Ecosse/Lingo/Sondek.

The Well-tempered Amadeus deck came with a simple Denon cartridge and sparkled with amazing depth, presence and range that the Sondek couldn’t match. I subsequently upgraded it with an improved power supply for the motor that elevated it further.

A wonderfully unconventional product but it works better than any other turntable I’ve ever heard and by a big margin.

Consumer resistance makes finding a supplier difficult but worth searching out.

Would I be correct in guessing you already own a Technics turntable. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

PS through Naim Superline, 552, pair of 135s

My two cents. If I had 5k, new or used, I’d get a P6 with an ND7 cart and be done with it.

If I wanted the faffing, I’d go LP12. But would have no idea where to start.

Nice spot!

Don’t forget the phono preamp which is important… I use a Gold Note ph7, it goes very well with the P6/nd7.

I have owned 3 turntables over the last 36 years. So first up Rega Plana 3. Classic turntable and no issues. Then Linn Axis then Linn LP12.

I have maxed out my Linn LP12 to top spec, although this has recently changed.

For £5k I would go Rega new or a Technics direct drive new. The Linn LP12 no doubt about it is a great turntable but for me they are temperamental, require constant maintainence and can go off kilter. Like a Ferrari or Lamborguini they are never simple no matter what anyone says.

If you want simple a Rega turntable or Technics will serve you well.

Look, I love my Linn LP12 but I have spent £18k on it since I bought it used. There are now no original parts as it’s modular, so basically a half new, half used Linn LP12 Klimax.

It’s been alot of grief at times. Some mates have Technics and they are bullet proof and sound great. Regas are great and sound superb. If I was to do it all again I would buy a brand new high spec Rega or Technics turntable.

Roksan have recently pulled out of vinyl and various dealers are selling off their stock of Xerxes at good prices, quite often with a Nima tone arm.

I have recommended Rega and Technics rather than my LP12, which I love but couldn’t recommend for the faint hearted. You need deep pockets for that.

£5k will buy a very good turntable especially a used one.

I would see what your local dealers have on offer it is a better way to be confident you will get a good used example and have some redress if there are any issues.

But a list of used or new

Linn LP12 (you can get a good used example for your budget)

Rega Planar 8 or 10 (you can get a new one for around £5K

Michell Gyrodec or SE (new)

Origin Live Resolution TT

The most important thing is to listen to them they all sound different to each other some more clinical and others mor musical and warmer some dryer. It is going to depend on personal taste to what you prefer and what sits well in your system.
