Which wine are you drinking? Tell us about it

After taking a dozen of those I think I’d have an unusual feeling.

You’ve inspired me to crack a bottle of this open to have with a chicken dish tonight. Riesling is my favourite white grape and compared to the stupid money commanded by decent white Burgundy, these wines are fantastic VFM

Congrats!

I have tried the Celeste, it’s very good.

We started off with this on my birthday yesterday.

What can I say, the English Sparklers and whites are doing it. What I will say is that despite the English produced wines being expensive because of the low volumes, they are steadily becoming well respected here in Oslo, not trendy but becoming known, helped by the state run Vinmonopolet doing a very good job in letting the Norwegian populous into this little secret.

I cooked a roast for Sunday lunch and to accompany I dug out an inexpensive favourite; Santa Rita Medalla Real Gran Reserva Carmenere. This was the 2011 and it was delicious, still with concentrated fruit and good acidity.

Enjoyed a glass and half from the vac-uvined leftovers tonight. If anything, even more impressive than the other night. Balanced and complex. I can’t ask for more at this money.

Luckily there are a couple of small glasses left

A slight diversion as I am not drinking these wines (yet). My colleagues very kindly gave them to me today to mark my impending departure from my current employment after 33 years (I hesitate to say retirement, as who knows what might be round the corner). They asked a wine merchant who I know quite well to put together a case of what he describes as his “naughty” wines i.e. not ones for everyday drinking. I have to say that I am rather pleased with the prospect of exploring them and every sip will me a chance to reflect on people who care. Chin chin!

Fantastic present. That Brunello looks rather special

The Brave Goose Shiraz 2019, another winner from the folks at Naked Wines.

Intense bramble and plum, balanced with toasted spice and a fine tannin structure, it’s hand picked, hand plunged, gently pressed, and aged in French oak.

Currently sold out, but that’s no real surprise.

@ quickbeam - An idea for a present we made just this year for my in-laws anniversary was to create a crate of 20 bottles of wine recommended by their closest friends but to accompany the wine selection, the meal that should go with that wine. So they were presented with 20 wines and 20 meals suggested to go with that wine including the recipe.

They are now in the process of working through the crate. The recipes were presented in a book with a short message describing the wine (or beer) and food combination.

Here’s a pic.

This really should go in the jokes thread, but I thought it might be appreciated more here!

Very nice ‘retirement’ gift.

The Batailley & Doisy Daene are excellent, I dont know the others, but they look very good.

JOF all i can say is ouch, I know that wine and the producer as its about a minute from me. Its 8 euros from them!

I like a good Riesling use to think they were all sweet. Not sure what the European varieties are like now but the Aussie style is nice and crisp. Great summer wine.

Really got into the German ones and now don’t like the New World ones, they are that sophisticated. IMO of course

Maybe your drinking the wrong ones.

That’s quite a difference, and that’s Norway for you.

The state run Vinmonopolet system does get its critics in Norway, but one aspect of the taxing system is that the tax rate is farely flat across the price range. So although one might pay a little more at the bottom end the same rate is posted to more expensive wines.

I, of course, don’t see much benefit in that for wines, but I do on my Port purchases. :ok_hand:t3::wine_glass:

There are some great German Reislings, very highly thought of here in Norway. For me, less sweet the better.

Moving here TOTALLY changed my Riesling appreciation. It’s nothing but sophisticated, rich but delicate, interesting wine. Oh and sweeter if you want with Auslese - stunning. If anyones interested I’m bang in the middle of the Reinland Pfalz surrounded by about a 1000 producers. look me up. Enjoy. (autocorrect LOL)
