Today after doing the Loisium tour recommended by @Veltliner I picked up various wine orders, one of which from Rudi Pichler in person. What a lovely guy. I‘ll be back. Later on I dropped in on Emmerich Knoll and although I couldn’t do a tasting I took a few bottles anyway, thank you @Rod_Smith for the heads-up. FX Pichler wasn‘t available for the second day in a row but they were very nice about it. Alzinger‘s wife was out so no wine purchased there. I am now tasting at Gottfried & Marianne Pöchlinger and I think I will have to stop buying after this as I may not be able to get my bicycle back into the car! ![]()
My cellar is available for any of the wines that you can’t fit in the car. ![]()
Rod -just bought and read your 2024 Bordeaux report. Always a great resource and especially for this challenging vintage. Batailley , at the price it is being released at , seems to be a great buy . Probably the stand out wine in terms of value for money . Well done to them and possibly my only buy of the 2024 EP campaign.( I gorged on 2020 and 2022 !)
Thank you Graham. Very warmly appreciated. Have been working flat out since, because they let you taste the wine on a Monday but announce the price on the Friday, and the report needs to be released in tandem with all this.
Fortunately we have a super efficient proof reader, although I imagine a few typos might have survived.
Some surprisingly great wines in what is otherwise a poor vintage, and with prices at around -30% from last year, possibly even some shrewd purchases, of Batailley is definitely one.
In London to judge Decanter World Wine Awards.
And the annual customary meet up (at 67 Pall Mall). Great friends. Great wine. Great combination.
The 1933 Madeira won, of course. But Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 1991 from a magnum ran it a pretty close second.
Lovely evening.
Despite drinking and collecting wine for over 40 years there are bottles in that photo I’ve never heard of. But I did enjoy a 2006 Basket Press a few years ago.
I also got one from Domäne Wachau today. As you already mentioned, the brand is available in almost every supermarket, and in the past, I wasn’t that enthusiastic about it. This is a Grüner Veltliner as Federspiel, it was on sale and costed one Euro more than yours. I’m curious.
@Quickben and @david1111 – Mateus Rose has a special place in my heart. Way back in history, my girlfriend and I would save up to go to take a local bus to a place called Chez Tony in Sherbrooke Quebec. We were in first year of uni in a smaller town nearby. We would share a plate of pasta and a bottle of Mateus. That was more than 40 years ago. Mrs PP and I have moved on from Mateus, but continue to enjoy sharing some pasta and a bottle.
Think a lot of us have a story from the 70/80s involving Mateus rose. Think it’s still available an oddly enough it cost the same now as it did back then.
I bet! Who needs a matchmaker when there was Mateus?
Just looked on amazon germany, 30 euros for 6 bottles
Martin
Does that include a a pair of flares and a flowery shirt? ![]()
And a hairy chest with a large gold chain. ![]()
$16 here think the last bottle I bought would have been in the early 80s and I paid around $12.
Groovy man , groovy
Far out.
Hi @Pete_the_painter how are doing healthwise?
I haven’t been active on here in the last months so I would be interested how are you actually doing
Things are ok thank you, in remission and trying to do as I’m told (although that’s never been my strong point). Good to see you back. Cheers
