A nice Sunday lunch at a rather nice country inn followed by this .

I like Dandelion Vineyard wines, especially the Pedro Ximenez . To follow the Christmas :santa_claus: pudding.

Lopez de Haro 2019 Rioja Reserva. We had this with pork chops and it is a delicious, not overoaked Rioja

You can’t beat a magnum of a classic Alsatian wine. I had a magnum of Zind Humbrecht 2002 Pinot Grus and it was fantastic with Lobster risotto on my 60 th. Trimbach Riesling sounds fantastic.

This Dry River Pinot Gris 2022 is mighty toothsome enjoyed with stewed Puy lentils and deep fried New Zealand cod. It has an oily texture with pears and stone fruit on the palate. An acidic finish prevents it cloying. Very moreish.

Gusbourne Chardonnay Guinevere 2021. A very generous gift from a friend. We had it with a paella and it was completely overwhelmed. Drinking it after the food, it is better but still a bit thin and acidic for my liking. Glad I didn’t pay the £40 a bottle that this goes for

2009 Volnay PC Carelle Sous La Chapelle - Benjamin Leroux

I visited some friends last week and knowing their fondness for Burgundy took this and a bottle of Nyetimber. The fizz was as you’d expect, rich and classy. The Burgundy was lovely, a ruby colour with hung learner, powerful nose of red and blue fruits. It had a powerful palate, acidity and nice soft tannins surrounding a very rich melange of red and blue fruits, with a lovely rose petal perfume. It’s well balanced, but the powerful fruit slightly hides the complexity, a lovely (dangerously easy) wine to drink.

(I had a quick look in the thread after I wrote this and realised that back in August ‘19 I’d visited the same friends, and took another bottle of this red, and a bottle of Bollinger GA. I obviously have a consistent view of their palates.)

I’ve got no cellar in my new house, so need wine storage. I’ve loaded my old Eurocave, but after 20 years of use 3 of the shelves aren’t stable and I only got 90 bottles in. Two nice chaps delivered this from CoolerSomm this morning, so I’ll start emptying other packing boxes of wine tomorrow after it’s stabilised. (I’ve been keeping the garage constant temperature with an electric radiator up to now, I need to get the wines unpacked before the weather gets too warm).

I’m currently unpacking the boxes my wine was moved in and loading the new wine fridge. I seem to remember that @Antz retired from Mentzendorff a year or so ago. I put this bottle on a shelf and noticed the label, thought it might bring back memories.

Unpacking the wine I came across this bottle with the cork partly shoved out, dunno how as the other 7 bottles left of the case are in perfect shape. I’d have guessed at it freezing if I hadn’t been controlling the temperature and if the bottles next to it hadn’t been fine. I thought I’d open it rather than put it away potentially ruined.
It was perfect. Very high level, a wonderful golden colour. Kerosene nose lasted a few minutes, then a honeyed sour citrus nose came through. The palate was gorgeous, mid-weight, great acidity cut through a honey and brown sugar medium-sweetness, citrusy flavours of grapefruit and lemon were predominant. I’d intended to have one or two glasses and drink it through the week, it was far too drinkable for that.

This evening’s wine to accompany confit duck and blitva.

Cigar box aromas, fruity nose but quite short on the palate. Some tannins initially but they open up with food and decanting. Good value from TWS.

Ruggabellus Efferus 2013 Barossa Mataro blend.
I picked this up at Circular quay Sydney 11 years ago whilst on holiday. It’s in great condition due to its screw cap and good storage. Kudos to its really basic light bottle with no punt. Very eco- friendly !
It’s really quite mature with a translucent garnet colour.
It has a spicy nose with hints of plummy sweetness. The palate is seamless with notes of Chinese five spice, plum, blackberries and leather. Beautifully integrated tannins.
