i’ve just picked up the rerelease of the first Soul. 2 soul album
I’ve never heard on any other vinyl album but there’s what I can describe a whoosing sound between tracks as it plays. Never heard it on any other album in 40 years and other albums play fine still. Any bright ideas please?
thank you
It sounds like a non-fill pressing defect, where the molten vinyl hasn’t flowed properly. You need to get a replacement. If you look closely at the record you’ll very likely see that it doesn’t look right.
I’m not sure it’s specifically a non-fill issue, that’s normally a sort of tearing noise where there should be music. It’s not uncommon though to have noisy vinyl that’s most readily heard as a whooshing noise in the gaps between tracks. It could be from handling or from dirt during the manufacturing and packing stages, or could be baked into the vinyl itself. I would first try cleaning the LP a few times on a good RCM.
I’m not convinced it’s a non-fill pressing defect either. 99% of the time a non-fill defect would manifest itself on the run-in and first track of both sides. From @sjw description the “whooshing” is between all tracks. A good clean will either clear it or confirm it’s backed into the vinyl. My guess is that it’s baked in and if it is, it needs to go back.
thank you All!
I had that problem on a UHQR release, not impressed. At first I thought the record must be warped but it wasn’t. Needless to say but it was replaced
In my experience, “whooshing” seems more baked in to the actual vinyl press.
Whooshing doesn’t really sound like non-fill, which is visible (usually) and described as looking like a string of tiny pearls and sounds more like paper tearing.
Of the two, whooshing is preferable for me.
Non-fill means a return & replacement.
Gone back and await replacement.
Thanks all
Juno kindly sent a replacement… bloody things warped
Just get the CD, just not worth the grief nowadays.
QC on vinyl appears to me to be on the decline.
Well my (lost) original album sounded far better than the cd.
The album was re- released as part of album day. Silly picture disc which may be the problem (?)
Of 3 copies all have the whooshing sound between tracks and on quieter bits and one is warped as well.
A £29 album…Juno have been excellent to their credit
That’s why it’s important to buy from a good reputable retailer, like Juno. None of this ‘SN’ nonsense!
I think picture discs on vinyl are primarily to look at, not to play. They are notorious for poor SQ.
