As a Texas-born and raised on the farm, red-blooded American I always keep a stack rank of real country-western artists in my mind. Here is a rough list which is arguable:

  1. Willy Nelson
  2. Johnny Cash
  3. Merle Haggard

Rest get more difficult…

I agree, Ian, when I saw the title of the thread, I thought to myself “Oh no, another good one gone”.

Emmylou Harris deserves to be on this list, methinks.

Besides Willy, Johnny and Merle I have also enjoyed Alan Jackson, Asleep at the Wheel, Chris Stapleton, Dixie Chicks, Dwight Yoakem, Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill, Garth Brooks, George Strait, Lee Ann Womack, Lyle Lovett, Patsy Cline, Patty Loveless, Ray Willie Hubbard, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, Tammy Wynette, Trisha Yearwood to name a few.

Thanks for this. Mrs TT73 and myself always enjoy your recommendations. We’re novices in this area of music. Could you suggest 3 or 4 albums from this list to get us going?

Thanks.

Studio jams from 1970.

I listed a number of artists that I enjoyed. Since you only asked for a few recommendations I bolded a few that you may want to start with. The selection was made from a list from my CD collection.

Asleep at the Wheel - The Wheel Keeps On Rollin’, Asleep at the Wheel
Chris Stapleton - Starting Over, Traveller
Dixie Chicks - Fly, Wide Open Spaces

I worked in lived in Texas for a few years and went to a number of live performances while living there in bars, dance halls, and large concert venues and found I enjoyed the music. A lot of wonderful memories.

Enjoy, life is sweet!

Wow. Thanks very much for doing this. We’ll start with the ones in bold and work our way through them. Must have been some great live music in Texas.

My brother saw Willie live in Bentonville, Arkansas, USA, this week with his band and said his show was outstanding. At 90 years old and still out there on the road smiling and smoking pot with Margo Price as a backup band. Somehow I imagine that is quite the bus ride.

Is this a great country or what? I love it when a product finds its market!

I’d add Guy Clark, Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell.
