Your wow speakers

Back in the day around 1990 I picked up a pair of ex dem Heybrook Sextets (with Tonigon ribbon tweeters). They were half price around £600 as one of them had fallen over and boshed the walnut veneer.

I reckoned if it cost me a few hundred to repair I was still quids in. My local french polisher came round and did a perfect job - couldn’t see the damage at all. I said how much is that and he said oh give me £10. Those were the days.

Over the years the speakers gave me much joy.

I first hear my dads 57’s at the age of three, they’ve been my mental audio benchmark ever since, still have them but they need a refurb.

I had mine built from scratch by Quad Musikwiedergabe, near Koblenz in Germany, the former German importers, who bought the original manufacturing jigs from Quad in Huntingdon, when production ceased here.

I suggest that you get in touch with Manfred Stein, the boss there, who will be pleased to quote for whatever work you need done. He’s a real gentleman, and I’m sure that he’ll look after you.

Incidentally, I see that you have a Nait amp. That will make the Quads sing. (I tried one of my pair with a late production run Nait2, and was really impressed. Quad ESL57s are notoriously difficult to drive, but the Nait is an amplifier that does the job really well: if you look on the net, you’ll find an article about this.)

Hope this helps.

thanks, thats really useful, I had not heard of them before and sending to Germany is a lot easier than the uk these days. I also have the original matching Quad 2 power amps and preamp so it would be a dream to get it all refurbed one day €€€€€€€!

Well, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that Manfred and his team can refurb the Quad amps for you.
