3.12 already delivered on sound quality, certainly gets the best from the Naim platform.

I agree. But if the wizards at Naim can work their magic and squeeze even more sound quality improvement, I’m all for it.

Yes, I’ve noticed the same thing here. After the 3.12 update and a reset two weeks later, I was able to enjoy it again, but in a completely different way to 3.11. I was surprised and listened with my mouth agape at what I heard. It’s all been described in your earlier post. The only thing I missed was the physical and emotional interaction I experienced with 2.8 and 3.11. It’s now three months on, and what I was missing – and more besides – has improved considerably and is back.

If OC 3.13 captures the NC SQ uplift from the just-released 5.4.0, you could be missing out sticking on 3.12, Dusty.
I understand 3.13 has been in the SQ tweaking phase for over two weeks now, so the folks with the golden ears and fingers on the PRaT’ometer at Naim seem to be going to great lengths to get the SQ of 3.13 right.

I share some of your skepticism…but, I think that Naim have ‘cracked the code’ with 3.12 and though I may not upgrade immediately, I expect that they will be functioning as a one-way ratchet for sound quality in future FW updates. Net or better in each area with few, if any, tradeoffs.
After the last year, I’m confident they have adapted.

They certainly got to the bottom of the issue that affected 3.10 - AFAIK it would start off sounding really good but after a while performance would drop as the streamer engine would get really busy with various background tasks. Working with SU to prevent those background operations from happening during playback made the difference. It was initially missed because the listening tests would always take place just after firmware was applied to a unit and within the quiet “window” before the processor started to get busy. So something was learned.

Richard, thank you and I appreciate your explanation. It seems so simple, yet the SQ upgrade was enormous once those aspects were optimized.

Curious what background tasks a streamer would need to get up to that would make it that busy!
No idea, I guess SU had it doing housekeeping tasks of some kind.

I suspect, and i think it was mentioned elsewhere, the SU board was “ ‘phoning home”. If I were the OEM, id like feedback on what my product was doing etc. Of cause this uses processing power and interrupts what naim would want the processor to be doing…..

As much as they can, yes, but any extra power draw from one section will have an affect - every little thing can affect every little thing…
