3.12 Firmware

I rarely hear the difference between updates

Morning all,
Thanks for the great feedback so far, it’s really good to see everyone enjoying it so much.

To answer a few points: No factory reset required after the update. A power cycle is optional, although I think the general consensus here is that it’s not really needed.

New Classic will be coming soon, but at the moment there isn’t an update in the works for NDS (and other green screen devices).

The security updates range a bit, from updated libraries (always a good thing that we keep on top of anyway), to tweaks to the messaging between the streaming and the app to improve encryption to higher standards.
Most of the security changes were required because of the assumption in the new standard that someone has already managed to get onto your local network, and could then perform actions on your streamer, so previously very low risk and impact (there were never vulnerabilities with confidential information or passwords, these have always been secure).

For this reason, version 8.1.0 of the app is required to keep up with some of the updated encryption for logins etc.

Finally, with regards to the volume control issue that has been seen, could someone please confirm if this is Android only, or if this has been seen with the iOS app too?

I just updated my Nova and am using the latest Android app. Volume rises to 100 by itself. If I try to change it with the app it keeps reverting to 100. If I select mute via app, it mutes, unmutes, then goes back to 100. The volume dial won’t move it from 100 either. I have max volume set to 20 in the app as to not get too loud.

Using the remote, the volume will lower and it will mute

Factory reset is my next step I think.

***Update: I have another Android device with the previous version of the Naim app. That version controls the volume correctly. But strangely, the volume dial on top still is unresponsive.

Hi All,
The app team are looking into this right now - it seems that 3 presses of the volume button with certain timing is triggering Android to translate “triple tap” into a hold.
It then gets latched and stuck. Force quitting the app seems to unlatch it.

We will get an app update in progress as soon as possible.

I experienced the volume issue with Android!

Hello to the whole Naim team.

First of all, thank you for version 3.12 – it really feels as though you’re listening to our requests. For the past two or three years, I’ve been posting a query about better support for metadata and album art on the radios. And now this feature is finally available – thank you

I own a Uniti Atom and a Uniti Nova, which shows just how loyal I am to the Naim sound.

I have a new suggestion for future updates: add a left/right level vu meter option to the front display. I’m sure this would appeal to those who discovered hi-fi back in the day, and would make the Uniti range even more attractive.

Perhaps this option is well achievable via software without being too costly

Thanks again,

Arnold

Hi @Darkebear great to get your fw feedback as always. It’ll have to do for me whilst I wait for the NC FW.

From your comments, you’ve mentioned that the new FW is very ‘open’ and ‘live’, ‘lots of space’, etc. Could that be translated as an emphasis on the higher frequencies or is there a natural balance across the tonal spectrum? Is there any resulting harshness/shrillness compared to 3.11, say on saxophone, female vocals, etc?

‘Organic’ can be difficult to put into words (for me anyway), but I sense that a lot of members were hoping for a little more of that from the new FW. In my mind, I don’t normally associate ‘organic’ with a highly open sound - unless, I suppose, the openness is very natural and ‘real’ sounding.

I suppose my biggest fear from the new FW would be potential for shrillness in the high end. I’ve spend a lot of time and money overcoming limitations with the previous firmware and finally ended up in a great place.

I’ll have to wait to get people’s feedback on the NC specific FW as and when it is released. But in the meantime, do you have any words of wisdom for me? Thx.

I went through our entire test playlist for treble and there was none of that with 3.12

There is exceptional clarity but nothing sounded unbalanced.

Hi, it also seems that the top part of the station information is now visible on my phone app, pretty sure I had to drag the screen up-to see any of it before. Have tried altering image and text sizes to no avail

Just updated Nd2 to 3.12.0 it fixed the gap between 2 track streamed by server on .dsf format ( dsd ) ,

This error on 3.11 version is annoyng on gappless album like I Robot

First impression on sound quality is good

Thank you Naim :raising_hands:

This happened to me a few weeks ago with an Atom HE. I speed tapped the volume up button maybe 5-6 times and the volume jumped dramatically. If I remember correctly it went from in the 20s to in the 70s. I was able to mute and turn it down though. I’m using an iPhone to control the app.

Using v8.1 of the naim app, Tried 3x over 5mins to update my 2024 ND5xs2 via Ethernet

Also did a power off, power on of the ND5xs2 with the same result.

Seems that my corner of the world Australia misses out on 3.12

I resolved this issue by re-flashing the openWRT firmware in my router.

Pleased to report 3.12 is warming up in my NDdac555

Where might be useful

Martin

I do wonder with all the firmware updates, making good tangible gains, if Naim should put more resources into software rather than hardware.

No shrillness whatsoever, at least in my setup. This was the biggest drawback of previous iterations. Now everything sounds balanced, smooth and organic, all very natural, with proper sound and decay all across the board

ND555 update just done and playing the new Tori Amos “In times of Dragons”.

Played this a couple of times on 3.11 and now 3.12 to my ears the music is more easy to follow and has me wanting to play more, with a little more volume. I haven’t made any changes for many years so feel that I know the sound of my system very well but of cause this could all be on my head but who cares I’m loving it!

Big thank you to all at Naim for continuing my enjoyment in music!

New firmware updated and using the latest Naim Android app, I got the 100% volume issue. I had in the app settings, Volume Control set to “On Screen Buttons”. When I changed the Volume Control to “Slider”, the max volume issue ceased.

I had similar thoughts. The descriptions I’ve read so far make me think more about hifi effects than music. Hopefully I have interpreted incorrectly.

Again, I very much share your thoughts.

I am going to update anyway, as I’m in the nothing to lose camp. I didn’t think I disliked 3.11 (it was superb compared to 3.10) but I found myself listening less and less, which is not a good sign.
