500 to 500DR?

Its the best dr conversion naim do, only the case and heat sink remains.
The dr certainly works best on amps over the power supplies

Thanks :+1:

My 2012 552DR was serviced by Naim last year. The 555DR on my NDS is only a few years old. A freshly serviced 500DR means I can sit back and just enjoy the sound for another decade at least.

I spend hours listening every night, I think it’s a great investment.

Thanks Dunc and I can’t wait to find out.

It’s found a great home

Wise words

At least with all the top DR’ed source, preamp and power amp, you can say to yourself that there is no where else to go……

Balance is everything. And we tip it at our peril

Hopefully it will bring you as much or even more enjoyment as it did for me.

Yes, that’s a good point. What you have is perfectly balanced, but maybe the speakers are now tipping that.

Not in this room.

Have you ever worked in sales :joy:

There is always somewhere to go, plus give it a few more years and naim will even have a new 500 series.
But you can only enjoy what you have, and enjoy it you must, as you can sit on the fence for ever, as there will always be something better just around the corner.

A mate of mine kept on about how much I spend on my system.

He’s got a couple of sports cars with a frightening rate of depreciation.

We compared how many hours each week we spend enjoying our investment.

The penny dropped :slightly_smiling_face:

I think I’ve said all I have to say Stu. There is no need to justify yourself here. The only thing is try to keep away from the addiction and really enjoy what a good Naim system is capable of. What I have does not always do what I wish, but when it does boy am I happy with that

The best thing to do is just dont go on hifi forums.
As there’s always the next upgrade.
Nd555, power supplies, speakers, the list goes on and on, and i am just as bad as the next guy, or maybe worse??
What i do know i have spent far to much on all this, yes its lovely and brings me much enjoyment, but so did my first naim system 30 years ago, as a lowly 90 series kit, but i loved it, and for valve for money against sound quality it was far better valve than what i have now.

Thats for sure, but i know its hard not to want the next upgrade, but if you can afford it, and no one gets hurt along the way, then i guess just do it as life can be very short, and we need to enjoy it as much as we can.

I’ve been headed on a journey since I bought my first Naim (272) in 2019. Certain freedoms were added to my life around that time.

And I really could have spent the money a whole lot worse

Would a Nac 52 be up to the job with a 500 or 500 DR or would forum members suggest a better pre amp would be necessary?

When it came out the 500 was paired with the 52. I have heard the 252 with 500DR and it sounded superb. So I reckon a 52 will sound great with a 500 or 500DR.

I would think that the 552DR will be better still. Question of funds though.

Will add now to this thread as I just upgraded from a NAP500 to a NAP500DR……, and in addition I also made an upgrade which is forbidden to discuss on the forum, so I will restrain from discussing it - but it of course also helps. I plan to publish in the coming period insights on what I experience in the upgrade while the beast warms up further.

Have to say that I am very happy that I had the opportunity to make the upgrade as I feared this would be not possible anymore after the DR upgrades had been stopped. But luckily the former owner moved to something else and my dealer could offer me a switch, obviously for a price.

So given the fact that’s a used example I shouldn’t require too long to get it to full performance. While we also need to move one of the speakers back and forth to replace my AV receiver as well, and my speakers tend to not love so much moving around……

But what about first impressions. It’s quite something. You realize it when you play some familiar stuff. Soundstage is better, control of especially the bass is much better, less noise, even better tonality….
I would now describe my “old” amplifier as raw and this one as refined.

Would of course also be interested about experiences from other forum members when they made that change in the past.
I will follow up with some impression posts in the coming period.
