I have moved my hifi to a smaller room and realise that the speakers, Spendor A2 I currently use are a bit much for the room. The room is roughly 10ft by 14ft. I have not demoed anything but feel that something like the PMC Prodigy one or ATC SCM7 may be suitable as they will have to be relatively close, six inches to a rear wall. My amp is a Supernait 2 and I listen to cds.
What makes you conclude that? Those speakers are not particularly big, indeed far from it, and your room although on the narrow side is around the average floor area of many aBritish living room.
Hi, the room dimensions that you have are on the lower end of what can sound good. But (depending on ceiling height) still within the âBoltâ area for good sound.
Personally, I would forget about changing your speakers and instead ask a dealer for a loan of the most affordable (for you) Linn streamer that has Space Optimisation included. Have the dealer set it up correctly and see how you feel about your changing your loudspeakers?
What makes you conclude that? Well obviously being in the room listening to them. The one thing I didnât mention is that when the room was built a sort of vaulted ceiling was put in making it the height of what you might find in a Victorian house.
As I can only realistically have the speakers 6 inches away from the wall there is a fair bit of bass âboomâ if you like as they are rear ported. Hence wanting something with less bass to allow closer positioning to the rear wall.
Hi @Charles , apologies for my previous posting as I can see that you are only using CDs as source and probably want to stick with Naim amplification. Consequently, amending my suggestion slightly, take a look at the Naim CI range of streaming amplifier (CI Uniti-102) which has some basic room mode correction capability.
Some people plug the ports to reduce bass. Might be worth trying?
Playing with positioning, including listening position, furnishings, and room treatment can sometimes work wonders, and a starting point might be to assess whether the problem is just a frequency or two or more broadband. Personally I would be loath to forgo full frequency range and would try anything I could before resorting to simply removing the bottom end by using more limited speakers (ideally not moving into too small a room!). But of course at the end of the day it is all down to your personal situation and desires, and what you may already have tried.
Neat Ministras are designed for close to wall placement, and seem not a million miles away from suitable for use with your current system. This from the Neat website
The Ministra is a boundary design, intended for discreet close-to-wall placement.
Just get smaller new speakers that will work well in the room. The room will make or break the system, and the culprit is mainly the speakers. Itâs the easiest workable solution in getting good results. Most box speakers need space from wall boundaries to sound good, and in a small rooms where placement options are limited, itâs bound to fail. Been there, done that. More advanced effort such as the employment of room treatment may help but itâs not an option for me. In the end I found another new room to place the system/speakers.
With a clean speaker slate and limited space it may well be worth looking at on-wall speakers, such as the ATC HTS range, they dven fo a version of the 40 with their sublime midrange unit.
I donât know about the Prodigy, but my twenty5.21i work very happily about 10cm from the rear wall. No bass boom or overhang whatsoever. The ProAc Tablette 10s mentioned above will also work well, but may not fill the room as well as the PMCs.
@Charles I think your difficulties with the A2 stem from their proximity to the wall behind them. I had the A4 model with the SN3. They were placed 17.5 Inches from the wall behind them. The manual for the A2 suggests .8 meters. I had no problem with the A4 relative to bass and my room holds on to bass, but my speakers were much further out than yours. I suspect you will have a problem with any model not specifically designed to be placed very close to the wall behind them. Good luck.
If your place is tricky then employing a good dealer for some home demos maybe the way to go. They will have lots of experience of what will and wonât work in certain spaces.
There are speakers that can cope with your limitations but realistically you wonât know until you try. Iâm sure there is a thread on âspeakers than can go close to a wallâŚ. â
Sealed boxes seems a good starting place, I have some 11âs and have heard 7âs from ATC and they are both cracking speakers but chat with a dealer. At least smallish standmounts arenât to bad to home demo (assume you have some good stands already if not budget cÂŁ500 - worth getting the right ones!)
