App random / shuffle issue

  1. Can someone from Naim explain to us, their long suffering customers, why their app periodically forces random / shuffle play upon us whether we want it or not. This issue appears to have been ongoing for several years now so there can be no excuse for it dragging on this long. Come on Naim - extract the digit and get it sorted.

  2. I had to list this topic under ‘Streaming Audio’ (even though it relates to playback of music files from a hard drive) because there doesn’t appear to be a more appropriate option. Why is this? Or maybe I just missed something when attempting to post this? (this is my first post so it’s entirely possible).

Naim don’t routinely monitor the forum, so if you want to draw something to their attention it’s best to email them.

Your issue is around a perceived issue with the App, so the streaming audio room is the correct place.

It’s worth mentioning that most people on here do not seem to experience this issue, and that it’s generally caused by inadvertent touching of the shuffle icon. The icon has recently been made larger and now turns orange when touched. Previously it was tiny and quite easy to touch inadvertently.

Your post does seem slightly confrontational, particularly for a first post, and that may not be the best way to get things done.

I’ve suffered with this issue for a long time and it most definitely isn’t caused by inadvertently touching the shuffle icon.

For me it seems to come about if I’ve been streaming a CD rip from my NAS and then move to Qobuz or vice versa.

Naim should take an interest here, if its happening to someone its not perceived, it happening. The app has been flaky and unreliable at best, mine works ok now on ND5XS2 and 2 muso’s. But get bored of rebooting every few days. I nearly sent a Muso back under warranty as it was so unreliable. Not good Naim, sorry. I know its not the same, but we have an all in one Brother printer scanner device on the same network, from about 10 years ago, it wakes up 20 times a day, does a job and sleeps, without ever failing any time for 10 years. This app story needs looking at by Naim people

I’ve brought this thread to the attention of the Naim person leading on the app development.

Hi HH. Thank you for your input and assistance.
For info, I’m using a Uniti Nova. I see others are using a range of Naim kit so it would appear that the issue affects all hardware using the app.
Brief update: when I fire up the app it’s default setting is almost always random shuffle and so I have to switch to what I would describe as normal mode - I.e. no random shuffle. This morning, however, it started in normal mode. I initially assumed the issue had resolved itself but I switched the random shuffle icon on just to check it was still working. Bizarrely, after about 5 seconds it switched itself back from random shuffle to normal mode. I’ve tried this several times now but with the same result. I’d be grateful if you would pass this information on to your contact responsible for the app.

Do you use a NAS to play locally stored music? If so, please would you say exactly which one is it, and which upnp server software you use?

This question also applies to @Buryfc

Hi @BeeMac and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your experience and hope you get it resolved soon.

My understanding is that the term “Streaming Audio” is intended to include playing from locally stored music (eg NAS or attached hard drive) as well as from outside sources such as Qobuz or Tidal. Indeed, Naim’s first generation of streamers focused on playing from network storage. My old 272 certainly struggled with streaming from online sources. But the technology has advanced rapidly since then and perhaps the terminology has not kept up — it can certainly cause confusion! But I think Naim’s use of it is pretty standard in the hifi industry.

Originally using a QNAP NAS running Minimserver.

Now running an Innuos Zenith Mk 3 using whatever the default UPnP server is.

I’ve had the same issue with both.

Thanks. I’ve linked this in to the beta group; the developers asked the question. It would be good to know from @BeeMac too, or indeed anyone else suffering from random shuffling.

Thank you for flagging. Worst thing about it it is random. Haven’t seen it do it for ages then it happened last night.

I know it isn’t inadvertent pressing of the shuffle app as you suggested earlier. I opened the app, selected the album I wanted to play. Then I clicked the track playing bar at the bottom of the screen to see the full track listing and both the shuffle and repeat play icons were orange. I hadn’t used either last time I was using it.

I did say that it seems to ‘generally’ be user error, particularly when the icons were smaller. I’ve experienced it myself, but only a couple of times in about five years.

I’m not at liberty to divulge any beta discussions, but if a few more people can say which server hardware and software they are using, it may help to get to a solution. The challenge is that there are so many difference bits of equipment being used, and the issue doesn’t seem to be easily repeatable.

Forgive me, I don’t know what a NAS is. Nor upnp. I’m not up on this sort of technical terminology. The issue occurs when I play music files stored on a Samsung hard drive. Does that help?

The best and most effective process here is to contact Naim support and explain your issue and then, if there’s no simple solution, they can can then escalate it to the development team.

You can contact Naim at support@naimaudio.com

I raised this issue with Naim tech support a while ago. After an inordinate length of time without reply or acknowledgement they told me they couldn’t replicate the issue and therefore there was nothing else they could do.

Please would you confirm that it’s connected to the back of your Nova?

Yes, connected to rear via usb cable.

That’s great, thanks. NAS is network attached storage, a little computer that can be used to store files, including music. Google Qnap NAS and you will see them. To get the files to the Nova from the NAS you would need server software, such as the widely used Asset. UPnP is a common standard to let things communicate, and stands for universal plug and play, hence Asset is a piece of UPnP server software. If you use this approach you can download to your computer and transfer the files to the NAS, without removing your Samsung from the Nova, which is what you’ll be doing at the moment when you add new music. People make this stuff sound complicated, but it’s quite simple really. If I can grasp it, it must be.

Thanks HH. Your explanation of NAS and upnp makes sense - even I can understand. Mind you, removing my Samsung hard drive to add new files is no great hardship - and the simplest solution is usually the best solution, so I don’t think I’ll be rushing to buy a NAS device and associated software anytime soon.
Let’s hope the Naim app developers can sort the issue now.
