BIG system change. Your thoughts/observations appreciated

This it seems is really a problem. Irrespective of budget there doesn’t really seem to be anything obvious to go for. Leaving horns aside, in the old days I would have simply opted for better Linn or Naim speakers. So that, when I had Kans and later IBL’s, would have been Saras, Isobariks, SBL’s or DBL’s. Now my penchant for horns would mean more expensive Klipsch or JBL, both of which are too expensive and too large to accommodate!

Thanks James. I think I’ll just stick with what I’ve got and enjoy it. If I wasn’t against streaming (having previously tried it with a Melco) I would be very tempted indeed by the Linn Klimax DSM which I believe you have. Sadly beyond our budget now but a really lovely bit of kit in the same way that I once regarded the LP12.

Pete, good to have you in a better place.

If you do want to experiment with streaming again then pick up a WiiM and have that input into your Qutest. Very cheap and easy to sell on.

Maybe you could try upgrading your cables or power distribution. I’m sure you could make some significant improvements.

Maybe it’s not about the equipments, but you are a man who had gone thru a lot, not the young one who had much fewer experience in HiFi and sound – so as Naim. Why not getting 42/110/Kan again, see what’s lacking and upgrade from there (if any)?

Yes I think that’s true. If I now heard my very first Linn/Naim set up (LP12, 42-5/110/Kans) maybe I wouldn’t be quite as impressed with it as my memory leads me to believe I would. Memory can be an extremely deceptive thing.

I’ve just wasted half a hour of my life reading and re-reading this trying to understand what’s going on. What a weird thread!

Why?

Precisely. That’s what I kept asking myself as I read through the thread.

Well it just seems a bit daft to waste half an hour of your time re-reading something that clearly displeases you. Unless you’re required to do something like that as part of your employment then why do it? And then moan about having wasted your time! I mean once I can understand and maybe even a very quick re-read - but to spend half an hour on it! You must have vast amounts of time to spare and be extremely bored with life! Next time listen to music instead - it will make you much happier.

Maybe, but the good thing is that you can extricate yourself at no cost, and if the exercise helps you to appreciate what you have, then it’s been useful. Sometimes one needs to confront a new reality in order to appreciate that the current one is actually ok.

Tough audience.

It seems to me that the OP has contemplated making changes to his sound system and has asked for views about that on an audio forum. He has then decided after consideration that maybe he’s not ready to make those changes for his own good reasons.
I’ve enjoyed the thought process and wonder why the audience doesn’t like the conclusion. Is it because you feel ignored?

It is interesting how people vary in their position on the volatility-immutability scale (if you haven’t heard of it before, unsurprising as I just invented the name!). It makes for a richer forum than it would otherwise be!

That’s a very good description of what happened and made me realise that I was making a big mistake. As you say luckily no harm done, just some time wasted and some inconvenience. But a valuable lesson learned.

“There’s nowt stranger than folk” as they say in Yorshire.

The OP starts a thread saying he is considering changing his system and asks for the forum’s thoughts.

The forum duly give their thoughts and suggestions. The OP, after serious consideration, decides to stick with what he has. Then some forum members imply the OP has wasted their time and ignored their advice.

I don’t get it!

It seems to me that some forum members just want others to upgrade and spend large sums of money, even when budgets are clearly constrained,

This thread is a great example of how the forum can help others.

I think some of the response is part due to watergate! Suggestions were given, then @70sPete ignored advice, closed down the topic.

There is a similar theme running through with this topic; hence seems like another wild goose chase!

That is why I believe some say it’s weird or a waste of time.

Good luck with your system @70sPete. I had a Nait 5Si and CD5Si and was a great starter system in my Naim journey. I believe what you have, albeit different is better though. So right decision made!

And sorry if some of us are a tough bunch. The Wild Geese !

Not familiar with the watergate thread, but this thread seems perfectly reasonable.

Hope you are keeping well Dan.

Hi Dan, I don’t see any connection between this thread and my water bills thread. In point of fact I didn’t ignore advice there I simply chose to not always act on it which isn’t the same thing. Just because someone suggests that I take a particular course of action does not mean I’m obliged to do it.

I don’t see anything weird in considering downsizing my system, asking for advice and thoughts on it and then thinking better of it and changing my mind. Or maybe I should have gone ahead with it to keep some forum members happy and not feeling that they’d wasted their time!

Anyway thanks for your good wishes and yes the CD5si/Nait5si is a great way to start your Naim journey but I moved on from that position many years ago. So as you say right decision made.

Many people here have downsized and I think it can sometimes and in some circumstances be the right thing to do. As long as the person concerned is happy with the results then that’s fine. But I would say to anyone contemplating this, as I did, please be absolutely sure you are doing the right thing before committing to something that is irreversible without spending huge amounts of money.

I imagine that what some people find odd is the way you had gone from initial idea, to apparently suddenly buying and committing wholeheartedly, then apparently equally suddenly reversing. That might not be how you see it, but perhaps that is how a reader of the thread would perceive it.

Of course, that very process, aided or not by people’s suggestions and comments, I guess is what you needed to go through to determine your own mind, in which case it was not a pointless exercise.
