Yes exactly. For me it hasn’t been a pointless exercise at all and the input from members has helped me to distill my thoughts into something coherent from perhaps a rather ramshackle and poorly conceived idea. This is where the forum and the exepriences of members can really be of immense value and for which I’m grateful. I can see how a casual observer of the thread might see it as a waste of time but for me definitely not. Hopefully at least some interest and insight into some else’s thoughts on their system plans for other people as well. I for one always find that kind of thing fascinating.
Perhaps consider a wider equipment stand - I suffer from tv overhang too but not quite as extreme. Given you like your system if you don’t need to liquidate, not changing makes sense but has done from the start.
The stand is perhaps narrower than ideal but stability doesn’t suffer. Given that we normally route the sound through the system then a reasonable quality dedicated hi-fi stand makes sense. I don’t like very wide stands and couldn’t really find a suitable wider modular stand at the right price that also looked good to us. So we chose the Atacama Evoque 60-40.
I can understand the big frustration and the bored state of some members. They didn’t succeeded in spending the OP money, which is the main goal of the forum.

Has big water bill to pay, no budget for hi-fi.
Actually there is a third thread about getting an integrated cd and amp, but doesn’t want a Star as it includes a streamer…. Bought 5 series and returned it now it seems.
We do like a laugh on this forum. The water bill is nothing. Wait until you try to fill up your car with petrol and diesel over the next few weeks!!! ![]()
But what is the conclusion finally ?
I wish a short fact summarization.
I don’t intend to re-read all here, but recall few headlines, indeed a very weird thread or maybe its just showing a situation many of us has been in ?
I vaguely remember the guy had a weak link but trying to change it all.
I have no idea about the water story, maybe its an UK thing ? - the drinking water in my country is poisoned, we’re all on a collective suicide or survive drinking Cola or Beer only ![]()
It’s a conspiracy to make us all go electric! ![]()

Brent oil down below $US90, crude below 87.. some big drops in last few hours. Despite the doom and gloom of MSM the real world moves forward.
Shame the Atacama Evoque 110-40 was designed for AV (and hifi) use - each to their own.
Member contemplating serious downsizing/downgrading, quite dramatic change. Reasons not clear but no matter. Others offer suggestions and/or offer advice, some cautionary. Member makes a decision and announces after the fact that he has bought said downsized/downgraded source and amp, and is seeking speakers to suit, proportionately downed. Others offer suggestions and observations. Rumbles on for a few days with that going on, then Member announces idea abanoned, will go back to and retain existing system. All done in 8 days, and all is well with the world. (@70sPete is that a fair summary?)
Maybe the capitalised BIG (system) in the thread title was a clue?
Hi 70sPete. I thought it was a very interesting post
I’ve kinda gone the other way and downgraded… ‘sort of’
I’ve come from Mark Levinson amp, ML cd player and Magneplanar speakers to XS3, streamer and ATC speakers, oh plus my partner’s turntable
I actually enjoy my music more now than ever and just forget about the system completely
I guess so.
That seems like a really good system. I’ve never heard Mark Levinson stuff but it’s got good reviews and certainly looks the part. What made you change? A desire for Naim or something else as well?
Every time I used the ML it worried me as the amp had already cost hundreds to service/repair and there’s no longer a UK service centre. I wanted to keep the Maggie’s but no longer wanted to feed them with a big, extremely heavy, high powered amp that they need
I wanted a simple system that I could easily get serviced and Naim (having owned in the past) was my first choice for the amp
Hi @ninanina
Did you ever compare your Magnaplanars against Martin Logan electrostats? If so, how did they compare?
No I’ve never heard Martin Logan speakers
A did own a pair of ESL 57’s for many years and they were lovely
Martin Logan is an American speaker maker. They produce electrostatics. We bought the basic ESLs 12 years ago. At the time we preferred their sound to the Harbeths. I think that the Martin Logan’s maybe the weak point on our system now (though a pair of RELs subwoofers has improved the overall sound quality). Living in south Portugal limits our options to visit dealers. Either a trip to Lisbon, Seville or London. Just need to get it into the diary and authorised.
If you like electrostatic speakers, or similar, Brian I would highly recommend taking a listen to some Maggie’s or ESL’s
Neither Maggie’s or ESL’s will ever be the weak point in a system
I personally would pick Maggie’s as you don’t have to plug them in and they last forever
