Broken Rega Cart (P10) - Advice

Well, very sadly and despite many warnings to stay away from the turntable, my cleaner caught a duster on the cartridge and has bent the stylus of my Apheta 3 cart very very badly (almost to 90-degrees). Obviously it’s never going to be used again. Have any folks here used other cartridges that are great with this P10 (2024) turntable without having to modify it? I don’t really want to spend the $3200 Canadian on a new cart and if there’s something great out there for less I’m open to it. Community, I welcome your experience.

Not on the P10 but on the P8 I use Hana carts. Are they available in Canada?

Contact the Rega distributor and see whether they can get it rebuilt for you by the factory. In the short term, if your phono stage has MM then try the new ND7 as a temporary stand in - you may be surprised.

On a different tack, a cover for the turntable would be a great idea. I use the Pro-Ject Cover It on my RP10. It fits nicely over the Fraim glass and I just use a metal stand-off and a rubber footer in place of the rear peg (which, with some winds of plumbers tape on the thread fits perfectly) to hold up the rear centre section.

Not very constructive.

This is a great idea Richard. Thank you for the tips. I like the cover. Very good idea – super helpful feedback. Thank you.

I believe so. Did you have to introduce spacers on the rega, or does it work without? I’d rather not modify the TT itself.

Here’s the metal stand off and rubber bumper/footer. It could have been made just for this application;

Damaged my Linn Krystal recently.
Insurance company dealt with the replacement and my dealer did the replacement under Linn replacement program, so didn’t even cost me the excess.
Apheta3 is a lovely cart, I ran one for 4 years on my LP12. Worth trying to replace it with another if you can swing a deal through insurance, but I don’t know how that works over there.
Good luck :crossed_fingers:t3:

I had a similar accident and decided to make a cover to replace the standard cover that gave more protection and more customised to the actual dimensions of the turntable. I then got my Apheta3 rebuilt for £580 by Rega.

I have not, but some people think it is necessary. The clearance is tight. The earlier SH and SL models would need no clearance if they are still available. The mk2 models appear to have the same clearance requirements as the ML. The Umami models appear to be similar dimensions to the older SH and SL models.
You may need to check with your dealer for recommendations.

Edit. It is reported that the P10 has more clearance than my P8 as the newer Rega carts are taller than previous Rega models.

In the UK Rega run a rebuild servive, it is MUCH less expensive than buying a new one. I would caution strongly against using shims. 1 it causes a deterioration in sound 2 if you shatter the ceramic brace you will regret it.

Do you have accidental damage on your house insurance? If so, now is the time to claim.

The Apheta does have stylus guard, albeit fiddly to fix, but probably worth it on cleaning days.

One does have to ask why, despite having been told not to touch the Rega, the cleaner then touches it.

I use a Shelter Harmony with my P10 and it sounds fantastic. Haven’t bothered with worrying about VTA.

I have the Hana ML on P10 through Stageline S. No issues with VTA and it sounds superb.

I always fit the stylus guard when not in use. When my grandson starts walking I may need a hi-fi guard! Also, the only cleaner of my system is me.

Agreed…our cleaner woulg go nowhere near our TT.

Jeez…. you lot with cleaners!

I bear with you … Last year, I’ve had a similar thing happening to my Rega Ania cartridge in th P8, although not the cleaner but my own stupid action. Luckily insurance covered a new Ania Pro which was offered to me by the dealer with a discount.
