Can't access Tidal via Focal & Naim App

Any clues? Can’t see how on my app

I am considering doing the same too. It’s poor value for money and, to be perfectly frank, the sound quality isn’t actually that good.

Go to the ND5 XS home page in the app, so that’s the page you get after you select the streamer, the page with the input selections on it. Then tap the gear wheel icon in the top right corner. Then tap on About. Then look for streamer version. It should say 4.8.00 but likely it will say something like 4.4.00. Anyway if it doesn’t say 4.8.00 then you need to update it.

You don’t really need to check though, as all the ND5 XS product were manufactured with firmware later than the early one the instructions tell you to check is installed.

It is possible that the 4.8 firmware is causing me a connection issue to Tidal via the Focal&Naim app, but unfortunately the above suggestions do not appear to help me. I used to access Tidal via my NAC 272 and used my iPad to use the app. I do not have a laptop and have no Ethernet cable either. Is there a different means for me to update. I do have the 6.1 version of the app.

You need a computer, it can be desktop or laptop, Mac or PC, any will do. Perhaps you could borrow a laptop.
You need a suitable USB cable too, to connect the computer to the streamer.
Naim recommend an Ethernet connection for all devices because it’s usually more stable that WiFi, but I did many updates with my Mac connected over WiFi and they always worked.

The alternative is to find a Naim dealer who can do it for you, or anyone else who is willing to give it a try. You don’t really need any specialist IT skills, just a bit of patience and a spare half an hour.

Thanks David. I’m running 4.7 so should be safe. Just need to try and find the remote.

In your experience, or anybody else’s, can I run the update without the screen working?

Yes you certainly can do the update without the screen. No problem. Just give it all time because the streamer takes longer than the PC. But if you wait a couple of minutes after the PC says it’s finished, you will be fine.

Also you don’t need the remote….

I wan’t worried until I read this!

Tidal works fine on NDX2 downstairs and Atom upstairs, Hopefully, it will be fine on the ND5XS2 when I net get to Tasmania.

Thats seems unsurprising as my phone app says that the firmware is up to date.

The reason for concern is that the app says that the NDX2 has 3.8.1(5347) installed. The app says that the Atom is up to date and has 3.8.3 (5447) installed.

How do I get 4.7? Am I about to need it?

I do not have a laptop plugged into any of these things, though my computer is on the same wifi system.

4.7 is a 1st gen streamer firmware version. You definitely don’t need it!

So 4.7 came before 3.8.1?

That’s weird, but if it means I don’t have to do anything then that is great.

Thanks

What I meant was that it’s a firmware version that doesn’t run on your 2nd gen streamers. It’s for the original Unitis, NDX, NDS etc.

It’s a totally different set of numbers (and different firmware versions!) for the legacy streamers from that for the new platform streamers.

Edit: As Chris says.

As an interesting postscript, although I can now play Tidal quite happily via my ND5SX, having upgraded to 4.8, after each session the Naim app logs me out of Tidal, so I have to log in every time. Not disastrous, but irritating nonetheless. I would be interested to hear if this happens to anyone else.

I don’t use Tidal but, having read many posts when we were originally beta testing it and subsequently, I don’t think that is normal at all.

Have you tried logging out of Tidal in the Naim app, then restarting the Naim app and logging into Tidal again?

@Harleyandy as David has commented, what you describe is not normal.
I use Tidal every evening with my Nova, using iPad 3gen iOS 15.7, never any issues.
I also have a SU and UQ2 again no issues.

Suggestion, you know where you are, which Naim app and version you are using, on what control point, model and os version. Useful if you can include those details, since a reply will otherwise be very limited.

One thing you can try. Log out of Tidal on any and every control point or player. Using one login, make sure your password is not containing and unusual characters. Then fully logout and shut down these and then restart your router, after which restart your control point and see if that fixes the issue.
If you are an android user, unable to help further.

@soundhound thanks for that, Good suggestion. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that! Makes a lot of sense. I have logged out of all devices and predictably Tidal is behaving itself and playing quite happily with no issues whatsoever. When nobody is looking I will reboot the router. I am using an ND5XS and XP5XS combo, now running firmware 4.8, Controlled by an iPad Air 2 running IOS 15.7.3 and Naim App 6.1.0. I will reinstall Tidal and see what happens. It´s always good to do a clean install.

MY Naim App says: Streamer version 4.4, cheching the NAC-N 272 device info via IP the Firmware Version: 2.0.68.13731 is shown. Can not be correct from my point of view, I could run Tidal until a couple of days and it just run with firmware 4.4 ff. Same as Version in the System Status information from the NAC-N 272.
Which is correct one and can I update to the newest firmaware from here?

NAC-N 272 is connected via LAN, not W-LAN or Bluethoot.

You need to update it to 4.8.
2.0.68…… is the firmware version of the Ethernet port, ignore that it’s unrelated.

Yes but the point is that Tidal has only just (last week) made the authentication change that was announced a year or more ago and the 4.8 firmware which was released by Naim to solve that problem does actually fix it.

Thank you all for feedback. System is now updated to 4.8.
