That’s sounds interesting… if I understand you correctly we were perhaps doing similar things with Sky in the late 90s into the STB virtual machine using OpenTV as a kind of application container. Back then itge service applications were downloaded via Satellite using a derivation of DVB-SI…with the back channel via dialup modem… this was before the internet and web was widely adopted by consumers, and the TV was considered the main online interaction device for OnDemand (what we now call streaming) entertainment, home shopping services etc (what we now call apps)
It’s all done on RDK, RDK-V covering video centric solutions and RDK-B on access products, xDSL, DOCSIS, PON, GSM (FWA).
The new Sky Glass TV is a test bed for a lot of this work, which runs on RDK-V.
The goal is access agnostic gateways with agility to be utilised for multiple on demand uses cases and with SDN enabled and supported by Matter and other LAN side enablers.
Keeps me fairly occupied most days it’s fair to say ![]()
Some bedtime reading for you:

Indeed… the software and products change but overall methods and intents don’t over the years ![]()
It’ll be interesting to see if Sky Glass becomes a major success… I kind of wish them well as an ex employee, but I have my doubts… I do think the paradigm is mis judged, as well as the timing unfortunate.
Thanks… need to get some shut eye now… off to RIAT22 tomorrow…
It’s targetted at a specific demographic and in some respects aims to mirror the mobile phone business model, they basically finance the upfront cost and tie you in to an upgrade cycle, the plan is to offer upgrades every 3 years, they’ll refurb those units and move them down the chain accordingly.
I was at Sky Osterley this week oddly enough, still makes me laugh they have their own Waitrose.
Kind of sounds like what they did (do) with STBs … but this time with more tangible and perceived value perhaps.
The problem with mobile phones is that the upgrade cycle has become diluted and lengthened… it’s not what it used to be, and business models have had to evolve… people on average hang onto devices for far longer… unlike say 10 years ago they don’t become rapidly obsolete anymore.
I can’t remember a Waitrose in the Sky campus at Osterley… though doesn’t surprise me … there is/was a big supermarket opposite though… but it was the late 90s early 2000s when I used to frequent…
Great day for it, I’m hanging out washing for my sins!
Did you experience the stuttering on your KDSM using a 100Mbps link or was it reported elsewhere ?
Just curious ![]()
I heard someone report it, so I tested and verified it myself. Basically, you can set the speed on some ports on the cisco switch.
Interesting - thanks. No issues here at 100Mbps (via copper)
Only if you stream hires (IIRC I tested on some 96/24, 192/24 Qobuz or higher on my local lib).
Again no issues at 192. I’ll have a play with Qobuz directly rather than via Roon. Strange.
I do not remember exactly if I tested via Roon or Kazoo, and I only spent 5 or 10 mins on it just out of curiosity. It will happen, but maybe randomly on some materials. I guess Linn support can offer more details.
Noted. Not happened yet, but we’ll see.
Just curious, did you test it with the next generation dsm/3 with the organik dac?
Yes, the latest KDSM/3. I’ve used Qobuz directly too at various resolutions and had no issues. I did see stuttering mentioned on another forum where the user was running a Melco S100 switch and using the 100Mbps port. Changing to the 1Gbps port sorted it for them.
There are not many pieces of hardware that i really disliked, but that Melco switch was unbearable to my ears in my system😬
That’s odd, it’s not cheap what was the problem.
It just sounded slow, bloated and really took the system down in terms of a musical performance with good dynamics. It was a well run in switch and @Darkebear tried the same switch and did not find it that it suited his system either. Others really like it, as ever, try before you buy………there are nasty surprises out their for those that assume a read across from good comments on here and elsewhere.
