@tt33 , do you now have this at home?

What are your thoughts?

Uh oh I’m a sucker for clear improvement paths :joy:

Not yet. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it today, just discussing with my dealer who already packed the boxes.

It will be better for sure.
You will need a much different pre amp to inpove over just the rossini. Even then it’s only small and depends more on the amplifier used.
But i found the dcs dac’s sounded better going direct into my 500dr, rather than going through the 552dr.
You will get more the dcs dynamics, clarity removing the naim pre amp.

As said on the other forum, do it as you won’t want it back in if you do.
You could always go digital out into the dsc dac, but obviously you will lose the sacd play back.
But the uplift in quality i believe will be much more beneficial

Thanks @Dunc. I like the Rossini so I’m going to try it out as that would replace 3 boxes and then I can look further at amp section.

What @Dunc have said it’s true, dcs goes very well w the 350s, some dealers at my side recognised this combo . Even with the DD dealers , who’s an “old “ friend of mine . :flexed_biceps:t2:

Naim has done a very good job w the new NCs, very versatile combi with other makes , using XLR, and its new signature sound .

But the DD gives a very different sound , which I like , and it’s so rooted with its power . But abit leaner on the low .

The only shortfall in the 300s vs the DD - faster attack for the DD, better dynamics / more transparency,
However , it losses to naim in terms of the low.

Very mixed feeling I had , will I be able to forgo the low that naim has ?

Hey @Dunc. I had a listening session this evening with my friends.
We were comparing direct vs via preamp. We all agreed that PCM sounds absolutely bland direct to 350s. To try to explain it, the sound seems like it’s in shades of grey. Compared to via preamp which had colour and musicality. The sound was very cold. To us, via preamp was a clear winner.

Then we tried DSDv2 upsampling which sounded better and got some musicality but still seemed somewhat lacking.

I need to spend more time direct to amps and then try via preamp but without DSD upsampling it’s a no go for sure.

Can you say what are your settings with direct to power amp?

Hopefully you are using balanced out/in.
Make sure you have the rossini output voltage set to probably 2 volt, as this will keep the rossini volume higher. This normal sounds better.
Filters are up to you.
Map probably 1, but again up to you.

But i would have thought you would find a more dynamic sound hoing direct.
I know a few naim guys using the 300dr that removed the naim pre in favour of gping direct. In this case a 552dr and 252dr.
I haven’t seen anyone that has had the newer range of naim pre amps, nor have i tried it, so things might be different with the newer range, but i would have still expect similar results.

I thought I have overspent on cables, I’m glad I read this.

This was with the 552. The 332 (especially with the power supply) is a completely different beast and is absolutely required in front of the 350s imho. I have tried a few sources direct XLR into the 350s and not one was better without the 332/300.

You won’t stop there my friend !!! :joy: keep it up ! :flexed_biceps:t2::grin:

Ya, the NCs 300 behaves differently , for the better . A new naim I would say.

Yes balanced XLRs.
Right, I used 6V as per the manual. I’m now testing with 2V, it seems it does sound better, more open and forward.
