My Meindl mountain boots fell apart after not too many mountain hikes. Even my first cheap Decathon boots lasted longer.
I thought I was downsizing earlier this year but I have found out since that I wasn’t. ![]()
You will if they don’t fit your feet comfortably!
Sorry to hear that, Nigel.
I am shocked and very surprised to hear that.
I have had three pairs of Meindl leather boots since I was about 16 and I’m now 62.
Also one pair of Meindl leather shoes that I wear for normal urban use as well as walks in the Lake District sometimes.
Their memory foam products are particularly good that have been launched in the last few years.
Did you return the boots to the manufacturer?
I think they’re a very high-quality operation and would be surprised if they didn’t want to help a person in that situation.
Yes, and if you put them on the wrong foot, or put them on backwards, or if you leave in the oven when it’s very hot, etc. ![]()
My response wasn’t being facetious, but was because shoes that fit me properly and are comfortable in use are rare. I’ve found from bitter experience that too many shoes which seem to fit and are comfortable for a few minutes walking around in a shop prove to be unwearable for long periods of real use: that applies to probably at least 3/4 of the shoes I’ve bought over the decades, resulting in many discarded at cost to me though benefit to charity shops receiving virtually brand new footwear.
This is getting more surreal by the hour ![]()
Well, I had an idea to write something about shoes and downsizing. But I was able to restrain myself.
Mine lasted longer than that but nothing like a decade.

PS Time for a new thread in Lounge?
Go Altberg, and enjoy the resoling of handcrafted, Yorkshire-made excellence!
One of my current pairs of boots is Altberg.
Roger
Like Berghaus, Altberg sounds a bit German.
I use Altberg too - great boots.
Unlike Berghaus, Altberg is still a family-based handmade business.
In 1683 Petrus Meindl was officially listed as a shoemaker in written records. Every generation since Petrus has had a member of the Meindl family registered as a shoemaker. In 1928 Lukas Meindl founded the Meindl company.[2]
In 1978 Hubert Hillmayer wore Meindl boots when he completed his ascent of Mount Everest.
Downsizing.
Downclimbing.
Etc.
On a serious note, I always downclimb every route I climb, if I am able to.
That way I get (approx) twice as much climbing in, and get used to downclimbing, which is a skill one does not want to try to develop for the first time out of necessity.
Some say that coming down the hill is more beneficial than the climb. Just ask the Grand old Duke of York!
He had 10,000 men.
To start with…..
10023, when I was there.
