Electronic music

How about a few recommendations in the category of electronic music, something to get me interested in exploring more.

Thanks
Gary

Back in about 1970 I went on an electronic music evening class at a polytechnic in London, fascinating and interesting, and I got to play with a VCS3 synthesiser, Revox tape recorder and generally had fun! Also heard a few tales about people like Stockhausen. But whilst having a soft spot for it I never really got into listening to recorded electronic music, other than one or two early Tangerine Dream albums, and the great Electric Storm by White Noise. It will be interesting to see f this thread brings up anything I might find of interest - plea to anyone responding: please don’t just name music or artists, but give some description, e.g is it very avant garde, or mimicking conventional instruments, or perhaps very rhythmic/repetitive with slow progression, etc,

If you are looking for the more experimental stuff I can give you just a few. Some from 1950s.

Edgar Varese: Poeme Electronique
Pierre Henry: Apocalypse de Jean, Variation for a door and a sigh
Morton Subotnick: Silver Apples of the Moon
Eliane Radigue: Islas resonantes (master of the drones, anything from the 1970s)
Suzanne Ciani: almost anything

Arushi Jain is an Indian born vocalist and modular synthesist the video below is from Lockdown I believe I discovered her music via her excellent Under the Lilac Sky LP which focuses on reinventing classical Indian music using electronic instruments.

I believe she had an album released last year which I’ve yet to listen to.

Try A Winged Victory for the Sullen, who are one of my favourites. Nils Frahm’s new live album Paris is excellent, as is his work with Olafur Arnalds. Another favourite is Otto A Totland, which is really more ambient.

Silver Apples are an interesting band. They are described as psychedelic electronic.
First album called Silver Apples and the second is called Contact.

I forgot Alva Noto
Very prolific and varied.
Revep is an accessible starter…….

I would say there two big genres here under Electronic music , and they are generally a world apart…
There is :
EDM. Electronic Dance Music… very beat and dance rhythm oriented and often quite structured
There is a huge list I enjoy: Chemical Brothers, DeadMaus, David Guetta, Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Swedish House Mafia, HEALTH, The Prodigy, MauP, Skrillex.

And ‘Experimental: Electronic music… which is more and about ideas, textures, and repetition with often strong rhythmic patterns.
My favourites include: early Kraftwerk up to Autobahn, Clark, Jean Michel Jarre, Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Bonobo, DJ Krush, Neu!

There is a plethora of “electronica” out there on the internet, I would look up Solar Fields, Woob, Carbon Based Lifeforms, and many many others

I suppose that for me personally, true electronic music starts with Tangerine Dream, Walter/Wendy Carlos & Tomita, and ends with Kraftwerk, not forgetting their offshoots - and I have a shedload of LPs & CDs of them :grinning:.

I see somebody else has mentioned Arushi Jain - look for her on Bandcamp.

I would add:

Tim Blake. - Ex Gong & Hawkwind, and solo as Crystal Machine

Albums:
Crystal Machine
Blake’s New Jerusalem
