Ethernet cables - YOUR LISTENING Shooutout Summary

Just pulling your leg

I am a rookie in the streaming world.
Bought my 222-250 this year, last 6 years i only had the Muso after selling my previous CD based system.

Will restrain from making comments about ethernet cables, except the ones on this post, because i am still learning and i am doubting my own conclusions, so better be quiet.

I think the catsnake is starting to sound better, i don’t know if in a few weeks i will like it as many others here do, due to burn in or my mind playing tricks on me.

A friend came here yesterday and brought a Silent Angel Bonn N8 with a PS LHY; instead of wifi to the 222 we used the switch, and the difference was huge, the bass got much better (we tried several cables but with all the cables the sound was better than wifi).

Unfortunately i forgot to put the Catsnake between the core and router.
Between the switch and 222 was much better than i expected and that’s why i thought about giving it another chance.
The cable that sounded better was the audioquest cinammon; we tried a more expensive furutech cat8 cable that i didn’t like as much as the catsnake and audioquest.

Next step, buy a switch, then decide if the catsnake is staying and where (core to router or switch to 222). Then a 2nd ethernet cable. Will it be the Catsnake that i hated some weeks ago?

How i miss a CD player ..

PS - My core is in living room near the router. The system is in my office, 20 meters ethernet cat6 cheap cable from the router to the office’s access point (wifi).

I found the CatSnske to be a good cable, other users have not so. Have gone full loom now.

Switch wise, I’ve tried boutique ones, but found no improvement over a NetGear GS108 switch, but have now included a Cisco C2960 just for the DSM.

Aldo tried boutique cables, but found no improvement either.

This set up may not work in all systems, but for my system it works well, keeping it nice and simple.

Question about roon core and ethernet cable direction.

I have it connected as red lines today. If not using DSP in Roon, is any music going through the mac mini and then back to the router and then to the streamer or is it just a ā€œremoteā€? If music transfer from router to roon core and then back to router and switch I’m uncertain if router or roon core is to be called ā€œsourceā€

Is it preferable to go from the core directly to the switch and not via the router (blue line)? Added noise going through the router?

Is roon core to be seen as ā€œsourceā€ when talking about direction of ethernet cables or is it the router (arrow, dot on ethernet cables where)?

Last question on ethernet cables. I see some claim short ethernet cables are prone to reflections being negative to the signal. 50cm or shorter they say. Does this mean that a longer ethernet cable could be better than a short (say 5-10m vs 1m) since reflections inside the cable theoretically become less of a problem?

lol we are back to the ā€œsourceā€ thingy

AFAIK, Roon’s RAAT stream is always from the Roon server to the Roon endpoint, there’s no stream from internet/local to Roon endpoint directly in Roon’s case. Regardless of DSP on/off.

For me, moving the Roon core (NUC) from the router to the the Ansuz switch improved the SQ and further offered an improvement when I replaced this ethernet leg with Ansuz A2 cable.

On a similar note, I’m now waiting for Rockna WaveLight Server to arrive which will serve as both Roon core and roon endpoint for my Rockna DAC. After a lot of deliberation, I concluded that I should try this combo which should replace a lot of variables in the Roon stream chain, such as NUC, LPS for NUC and ethernet cable for NUC. All of that will be inside the streamer.
We’ll see how that’ll go.

I also prefer Roon core to hi-fi switch rather than router.

I’ve re-arranged the setup so it is now chord c-stream directly from roon core to switch instead of via router, and then supra cat8 from router to switch. Sounds bit better.

Now try a different cable on it and see the effect.

One of the best recordings one can demoed on. :flexed_biceps:t2: it’s that good!!!

Try it on your streamer

I saw them in Stockholm on the original use your illusion tour early 90s. Major fan back then

I heard Network Acoustics is about to release a new reference cable that is a major step ahead, also outperforming the best Stealth cable. Will be exciting to see.

More filters available that get good reviews. Hans just published this.

Love the picture print of ā€˜wood’ as a proxy for ā€˜natural’…

Ghastly objects.

Honestly - I don’t believe a thing on this thread anymore - or rather - I do believe that what people are posting is an accurate representation of what they think is true - but who knows how things would sound 5 mins later when some other uncontrollable variable changes.

All this stuff is at the tail end of optimization - and the tail end has to be different for everyone…
And psychoacoustics doesn’t help.

Makes for entertaining reading though

Certainly - I don’t believe anything i write.

New affordable switch from Melco. The Dela. It sounds supra analog.

Has anyone tried the DH Labs Reunion ethernet from the US?

Cross Posting Here / and if folks can’t answer this you’ve got no right to fuss around changing cables:
