Ethernet cables - YOUR LISTENING Shooutout Summary

Indeed, this is often the recommendation and for good reason.

The irritating thing is that cables which are shielded but where the shielding is floating (as in the BJC Cat6a incidentally) are not technically shielded (and therefore not true Cat6a) but can sound better in some systems and environments (like mine).

That comment is often repeated.

It is a truism of the data cabling/telecoms world.

(I worked for BT for a decade.)

It is a workable generalisation for people who build industrial and wholesale data networks.

It just doesn’t apply to hifi because:

  1. hifi systems are extremely sensitive systems designed to amplify subtle electrical changes.
  2. the effect of SQ data cables have in a hifi system is not about data transfer, it’s about electrical noise entering the cables and passing into the hifi system.

I believe you that ā€œThe engineer in charge of all dCS network and streaming specifically recommends the use UNSHIELDED cable ie CAT6.ā€

What you do not give is the reason why he recommends that (apart from the above, which I’ve refuted).

The question is whether that’s the result of extensive empirical testing he’s done with using posh and cheap cables of various designs and Cat levels on various items of dCS kit in various test systems in homes and at his offices?

Or is it just because dCS doesn’t want to provide an expensive cable, because they know it won’t necessarily work in everyone’s house?

If it’s the latter reason, then he’s just pushing a company line based on underlying financial and business strategy reasons.

So it is misleading as an assertion on this thread where we know that different ethernet cables can and do make a significant difference to our systems.

I can also note that when I bought a dCS Network Bridge it came with what appeared to be a very cheap ethernet patch lead that was so badly packed and tightly folded that it looked as though it had sustained damage in one place. I didn’t even test it or use it.

Also, in the manual for that piece of kit it said that dCS supplied a very cheap IEC power cable because they assumed that buyers would already own and use much better quality power cables.

Finally, as dCS knows that there are lots of digital cable deniers out there, some of whom are very activist on the main forums, they may be afraid to admit that ethernet cables make a significant difference to SQ as it might alienate those customers who are ideologically opposed to such differences.

I’d say the unshielded recommendation avoids creating ground paths where you don’t need them - a problem you avoid if you stick to the unshielded cables. I’d expect this is where the DCS engineer is sticking to the KISS principle. Something that sometimes gets forgotten when audio is involved :slightly_smiling_face:

The KISS principle leads to a Bose wifi speaker in audio!

I have mine plugged in. Looks quite sexy with black boots on. Definitely better than my BJC 6a. More punch and better dynamism. Quite pleased so far! Thanks guys!

I found the CatSnake improved over s couple of days and opened up, giving more air and sounding more natural.

I never thought i would ever say this, so i’m eating my words here - it knocks the Vodka into a cocked hat! :zipper_mouth_face:

Yep, IMV the CatSnake embarrasses the Vodka for a fraction of the price.

I now have CatSnake between 2960 & ND555 (was Vodka) and between 2960 & UnitiServe (was Cinnamon). The fun bit is I still have Vodka between my two 2960s, as I like to make changes in stages so I can properly evaluate the improvement (or otherwise) of each change. So you know what comes next!

@frenchrooster, have you received your CatSnake yet?

OK OK i will order one.

Where are you going to try it and what cable will it replace, Gazza?

Oh and remember to order your CatSnake with the floating shield, very important.

Ordered 2 floating cables, replacing Vodka and a melco cat7 cable. One between switch and nd555, the other switch and Uniti Core…i crumbled again…but it is relatively cheap.

But still after watching the Toyah and Robert Fripp video that @ewemon posted in the music thread i think i am coping rather well with lockdown. :grimacing:

watched that too….feeling quite sane at the moment!

Is this like the ā€˜Tuned Aray’ cable design?

Have you heard or bought one of these Ghent ethernet cables, or compared it to other cables?

Have you compared it to your BJC 6a recently by actually swopping them in and out of the last leg?

Or did you just know it was better when you first put it in?

Could it be that it sounded better because it cost more???

Or was there a clear difference to other cables?

Do you know anyone else who has tried it round here or on other forums?

I’m considering trying one of these on my last leg into the 272.

If you haven’t compared it recently, could I persuade you to do a comparison some time with the BJC 6a in the last leg before your Naim DAC v1?

No and no. Partly because I don’t like very fat, heavy cables and partly because I didn’t like the Metz connectors when I tried them on the Wireworld cables I tried.

Yes, I bought the Ghent but prefer the designer cables cat 6a floating

Interesting and indeed good to know. I was led by pure prejudice. How’s the DC4 running in?

Not yet, a bit long delivery. However as my pre is for service, I will not be able to comment on its sound before around 2 weeks.
During the waiting I will run it.
