Ethernet Switch and Cables Mania

And that, my dear friends, pretty much sums it up. :joy:

I think now that I’ve got it I’ll try and get an adapter to test it within the River return period.
Thanks

With the dc3

Nothing special, a dual 5v and 12v (separate transformers) Chinese built unit used for the last 5-years or so. The 5v was used for the RPi & an earlier SonoreOrbiterSE unit, but now used for a Chromecast (Roon Display) and turntable light.
The SoSE got a higher current version, which the RPi has inherited.
The SonoreUPnP Bridge now runs on a UltraRendu with an Uptone UltraCap LPS 1, but the 1.2 energising supply with the earth shunt.

But all this was there pre-EtherRegen, so the SQ improvement this switch has bought with no other changes.

There is a Listening Impression thread here UpTone Audio EtherREGEN Listening Impressions - UpTone Audio (Sponsored) - Audiophile Style
This also includes a couple of 2590 users running comparisons.

But I have to ask myself if this is a wind up:joy::joy::joy::joy:

The bundled supply. I use it as sold first before deciding on upgrades to supplies.
I’m hearing a device that is very capable that is also running-in but from an already high level of inherent performance. It is sensitive to Ethernet cables like the other switches I’ve tried, despite some saying it is not so. It is behaving like a switch, a ā€˜HiFi grade’ switch if you like. Sweeter and less grainy than the Cisco switch.
Only by comparison can I say that though - the 2960 is musically great - obviously nothing changed there and it does not sound ā€˜broke’ or any such - but by comparison the ER is sweeter and cleaner if still bedding-in (meaning the signature has occasional ā€˜bumps’ of over-brightness that change over a few hours).
After a day run-in of ER is is more consistent and calmer than from new, but most new HiFi items do this sort of thing so I’ll give it a few days to see where it goes. I’m not going to play with other supplies on it until I hear it run-in with the one it came with.

Switching between the 2960 and ER is interesting - I can listen to either but the ER has a richer presentation and a warmth - the Cisco is dryer and no-nonsense even-handed.

DB, apologies if you have already covered this but are you using the ER as a single switch or in combination with a Cisco switch. If the latter, what sequence of switches are you experimenting with?

I tried it so far on the end of what I had, so 2940-2960-ER - that at first sounded ā€˜wow’ good, but with run-in became unbearably bright.
I then swapped it (the ER) from the 2960 to the ā€˜first’ 2940 switch and it sound very happy there.

Now I have the 2940 feeding both the 2960 and ER and can swap between the two for comparisons - as thy both sound happy in that ā€˜two-switch’ mode and it just makes my life easier to get the measure of what the ER brings to the party compared to the 2960 as second switch.

I’m already sold on two switches as it (in my system for me) made a considerable upgrade over using one, so it made sense to try the ER in that context as baseline. It may be that later I try it alone to Router - I’ve nothing to gain as I still need the other switch for other duties. I’m also at some point going to see if the ER optical module path to the Cisco optical has any benefit or not.

I’m not dogmatic on all this - people can blind themselves at times by working to a concept of how things must work (dogma) rather than investigating how it actually does work (science). Experiment-results-consideration-retry experiments-learn is generally how I do things. Also have long breaks to do other things as it is very demanding not to rely on the comfort of a dogmatic world-view when you are investigating what really is happening.

Fortunately I tend to work in intense considered short bursts of activity - followed by very long periods of music and other activities to recover. I don’t really like ā€˜tinkering’ but I do like the end-result of all the effort and pleased when I seem to be getting somewhere.

All switches go ā€˜both-ways’ and I don’t think people consider that at all much - it is not just feeding the data to the ā€˜DAC’ - in my case the ND555 has already cached the whole album and there is no data-flow through the ER at all at any time as the Melco-ND555 is all on the ā€˜B’ port side of it ā€˜daisy-chained’ - so - dogmatically - it can make no difference (considering only what you think can be possible) — but in fact it is very easy audible and does make a difference. I think I know why, all good physics reasons.

In meantime - try it and see! :slightly_smiling_face: :bear:

You are looking at least a week of burn-in for the EtherRegen and it’s character will change over this time.
On first usage it was the quality of the bass handling that was improved along with a lower noise floor, but I suddenly noticed that it was providing much more detail after about 3-weeks and things were just sharper and better placed.

Thanks for the insight - I shall see! :slightly_smiling_face:
It is quite charming presently. Like a lot of other HiFi items (equipment/cables) that are inherently capable of resolving details I find ā€˜run-in’ can be where all that capability is swishing-about and not aligned and stable - it gets harsh, bright or other presentation that puts it at you in a way you can’t use - until it all settles-down.

I like this: Cisco ws-c2960cg-8tc-l 8-port Gigabit switch

ā€œI think I know why, all good physics reasons.ā€
Why?

Well I just made a significant boost to my system. I put the Christmas Tree up. Sounds better instantly as where it is is likely absorbing my rooms normal reflections and soaks up a bit of bass to. Need to work on if changing its direction and the order of the lights helps it some more. Maybe another tree on the other side will increase the sq?

I’d be happy to be one of them if they were readily available to home demo! I’d trust my ears over an oscilloscope any day :grinning:

:small_blue_diamond:@anon77199223,..Yes it is a very interesting experiment,.especially since this is relatively cheap to try.
And given the soundquality increase we have received so far,.it is a very cheap experiment.

  1. No,.we had this cable (see below),in our Cisco 2960 even before we connected this LPS. So the soundquality increase we previously described,.depends solely on this LPS.

  1. The contacts are Furutech’s best FI-E50 NCF,.so they cost a little more.
The price in Sweden is £637.

JimDog,.as you’ve probably seen,we’re testing different contacts on the same cable,.Jorma Design Duality.
That test is not complete yet,.so which contact/Jorma cable who will be 100% optimal for this LPS,I can not yet answer.

For example:
There is definitely a difference between these two top-contacts in Soundquality (see below),.both are extremely good.
It’s more about finding the right synergy,.to the products which they will be connected to.

• Oyaide M1/F1,.their best contacts.

• Furutech FI-E50 NCF,.their best contacts.

What these Jorma-cables costs in total,.I can’t answer.
For these Jorma Design Duality cables,.I have fitted with significantly more expensive (perhaps better ) contacts.
Jorma Design Duality,.comes in original with Oyaide P/C 029 connectors.

•These Duality-cables also won this prize 2018,.with these Oyaide P/C029 contacts.

I was so lucky,.so I can buy these on loose meters.
Therefore,.we can do these experiments.

I think (but don’t be sure),.that if you call and talk nicely, then you might get to buy a few meters.

But keep in mind that they must be fitted correctly,.with the right Nm-value etc, etc.

If you don’t do that,.they certainly don’t sound optimal.

It wound take a long discussion off-topic with a lot of sarcasm from people that think they know better to discuss fully.

In short - it is Electro-Magnetism (EM) combined with Resonance in places and propagation along line of least resistance, impedance mismatches at boundaries, reflections and transmission-line imperfections - more localized resonance - and on…

EM once evoked somewhere - like any oscillator (count them) generates its own effects out to infinity preferentially along line of least resistance and will interact with other such fields making subsidiary effects that do the same…world without end.

We have the illusion of control - we say ā€˜switch’ or ā€˜Streamer’ or ā€˜DAC’ and have devised these to do what we want - and they do - within the EM world that exists back of it all. We have devised protocols and abstractions that also work nicely and we get what we want.
But then we never look back at the wave of what we also got from our creations - it is there too obeying the laws of physics. We have very sensitive DACs translating ā€˜1’s and 0s’ into an analogue signal and it all connects-up with a power supply that is itself immersed in what is the environment we have made.

It is actually a rather complex system that will find and sing its own tune with what we have put there in terms of geometry, dielectric, non-linearity, conductivity etc…
We can ā€˜hope’ it has no effect we don’t want - perform measurements with equipment which by their very nature average-out what we want to measure to show nothing or lack the real-time resolution of the human ear-brain system.

…that is already way-off topic, so suffice to say ā€˜more to it’ than what we think is just a simple logical rather abstract system of networks.

Hello DB–I have settled similar to your findings. I have the Router & Nucleus+ & Unity Core feeding the Cisco 2960 and it feeding the ER thru the A side. I have the B side of the ER feeding the Dac. That seems to give the best overall SQ. I have about 3 weeks run in time on mine. SQ in quite good. I am very happy. The Router to Cisco is a 5m BJC. All others 1 meter BJC. All wire, no optical. All with stock PS. Cisco has internal ps. I might consider an upgrade of power cable for the 2960. Don;t want to break the bank. No experience with powercables. Any suggestions for one about $100-200?
ER alone better than Cisco for me. Two switches better than one. I wonder what 2 ER’s would do?

Peder, your cableholic friend may be tempted by the Hemingway rc core cables. From 6k to 47 k. Chord Music price is their entry level.

Thanks.

How is it configured in terms of V/A?

Did it make a big difference in the case of the ER too?
