Ethernet Switch and Cables Mania

I have no thought as to whether deleting posts is normal for sone people, regardless of age. But I am intrigued as to what action would happen in Sweden…

Regardless, nice pictures - and back on topic as you used to say :slightly_smiling_face:

You need to give that cable at least 4 weeks…then post views…but it does look as if you are getting a positive indication.

This is the best here …yum!!!

I think its what is know as Arctic charr in the UK, a few lakes like lake windmere and some lochs in Scotland are populated with them.

Thanks FR–this is a really nice synopsis/summary of what has been said about switches. Interesting that 6400+ posts basically boils down to this. Great job.

I think that the whole switch debate regarding sound quality is network dependent… for some reason or other…

Sorry if I forgot you Pat. It’s not easy to make a summary when there is so periphery out topic comments, and specially so many posts.
Maybe other will comment my summary and give more correct information .
However I think that globally I am not far from the feedbacks and personal experiences I could follow from the beginning.
Perhaps the ER doesn’t bring uplift in your system. I believe you. But perhaps the item was not optimal? It’s also a possibility.

Here’s a summary, ethernet cables and switches are largely network and system dependent. However, a majority has been observed to be satisfied with their Cisco/BJC networks while others strive to find happiness in the boutique cable and switch industries.

Also if it was earthed or not… not sure whether Pat experimented with that

Did anyone hear the Chord EE 8Switch demo at the Bristol Show, comparing it to a basic Netgear switch, and if so what did you think?

I heard it demonstrated at the Stockholm High End Show a couple of weeks ago. There was only a comparison using one track. I thought I could hear an improvement at the beginning of the tack after the switch from the Netgear to the EE switch. As the track progressed, and afterwards, I was less sure. I would need to try again to reach a firm conclusion. The equipment used was a Naim Nova and small Neat stand-mount speakers. Before this demonstration, I had been shown what switching from a Naim ND5 XS2 to a NDX 2 (through a Nait XS3 or Supernait and Neat floor standers) did. This improvement was on a completly different level, it was clear cut.

If you read the Bristol show thread, some have listened to this Chord switch which was compared to the Netgear. They found it better sounding. However someone pointed that he felt that Cisco gave a bigger uplift from Netgear, than Chord from Netgear.

Yes, Nigel, I heard it too. It was clearly and significantly better than the Netgear but I’ll need to try one out at home to see how it fares against the Cisco. I was a bit sidetracked by the ”cable-that-shall-not-be-named”, which was a real wow.

I think the Netgear switch was one of the 5 port blue ones (GS 105?).

It was upside down but it looked like a 5-port. Chord were using 3 of the Netgear’s ports and there was not much room left. It was indeed blue and looked very much like my GS105 I used to use at home.

FR, I think you were referring to my review at the Bristol Show. I said that I noticed a real difference between the Chord 8Switch and the Netgear but I also noticed a difference between the Cisco 2960 (one then two) compared to my Netgear at home, but believed the difference at the show was greater. I will also need to check at home when the 8Switch is released.

The big test of course will be the EtherREGEN vs the Chord EE 8Switch.

Gloves off!

It’s funny. So it was you. In that case I misunderstood your question. Because outside the show, I don’t think someone could have been able to buy it and test for now.
But i am curious like you.

I wonder if @Darkebear is considering a showdown between the EtherREGEN and the Chord 8Switch in his system?

I’m holding-off any more comparisons for a while as the performance I’m presently getting with the ER switch is just getting better and better with run-in and further experimentation on positioning.

I had thought that run-in would be a few weeks at most but something is just improving every day now that is making the switch combo I’m using really fly right now - quick, smooth and insightful, natural detail and perspectives and much more.

Of course I’m really saying that this is what my system is allowing to be heard now as the switch gets itself out of the way. This may be missed by some - the switch does not impose an upgrade on a system but rather allows you to hear better what your system can do. I’m very pleasantly pleased and rather surprised by how large the improvement is becoming.

I use three switches:
Router - Cat5e (6m) - Cisco 294- AQ Cinnamon (1.5m) - Cisco 2960 - AQ Vodka (0.75m) - ER switch - Cat 6 Kabel Direkt (1.5m) - Melco - AQ Vodka (1.5m) - ND555

The largest recent improvement was placing the ER switch on a heavy-duty hardened and heavy glass shelf. It was just out of curiosity but everything improved and the Bass massively fleshed-out after that.

One of the largest upgrades is waiting for something you generally are liking to bed-in and then tweak it for performance in your system I’m finding.

The reason I’m quiet is that I feel I’ve arrived - at least for a while. :bear:

DB.
