Ethernet Switch and Cables Mania

Hmm. That would seem to be a reasonable starting point for an audio switch design. Perhaps their licensing costs are prohibitive which is why all these “specialised” audio switches are using common or garden consumer chipsets…

Hmm I just looked the current non discounted price for a DP83848K (40 Pin device) and it costs 84 cents in volumes of 250

Hah! Obviously not a cost issue then.

:grinning:

And you come on only to comment this “ go on and on “. :star_struck:

Hi Nigel, I’m using the 8PT-L and it sends POE to the 8TT-L. My 8TT-L came with a power supply. I know there’s a supplier of the Liteon external power supplies for these Cisco’s on ebay if you were to do a search on the specs.

Not quite correct FR - as usual.

My initial contribution was, and still is, a suggestion that somebody creates a summary of this thread. I note that Jimdog made an attempt some while back, but Peder and your good self appear to be absolute whiz-kids at recalling statistics in this and other threads, yet neither of you appears to be remotely interested in summarising what could be a very useful summary of listening tests.

Cheers
Don

Because perhaps we are not interested by measurements, numbers, summarizing or being “ absolutely correct “.
We still don’t know your experience, your system, your Ethernet cables…but for you it seems secondary. For us your interests are secondary.

However, to try to please you, I will try a very approximate summary:

_ a majority of members found an upgrade in sound quality going from cheap Ethernet switches to Cisco catalyst switches.

  • Cisco PD models, with external ps, seem to sound better than models with internal ps.
  • cascade Ciscos sound better, for a majority, than Cisco alone.
  • some, but not a lot tried, found Cisco Poe models quieter than non Poe. With a bit better sound.

The Melco S100 switch was tested by 2 or 3 members. One kept it, another preferred the Cisco, the third will try again later.

  • Some members tried the Ether Regen switch and all were satisfied, found it better vs the Cisco. Some use cascade ER, some cascade Ciscos with ER, and found cascade sounding better than ER alone.
Other switches like Aqvox SE, Paul Pang…are also used. The owners found them better sounding than cheap switch
  • one member is very satisfied with his Ubiquity switch. This same member is upsetting Peder for some reasons, which creates peripherical threads.

Ethernet cables: There is no real truth on Ethernet cables. Some prefer cheap ones, other more expensive. A majority of members having tried the Audioquest vodka is satisfied with it. However some didn’t liked it.
With the help of this forum, a lot are satisfied with Blue Jeans Ethernet cables.
A minority use very expensive Ethernet cables as Diamond from Audioquest, and even more expensive as Chord Sarum t or Chord Music.

Well that’s a pretty graceless response.
My system is totally irrelevent.
I haven’t suggested that a summary should emphasize numbers or merely reflect listenning experiences.
And my expectation is that many others will be interested in a meaningful summary, it’s got nothing to do with “pleasing me”

Nevertheless, thank you for providing the summary above.

:small_blue_diamond:Yes Don,.and as OP for this thread,I report on strange things that going on in the thread.

•And I will continue to do so,.if you are not interested, you do not need to read or comment…As Simply As That…!!!

But this is especially important in this case,.when many who have written in the thread, refer to previous posts with numbers.
Then it is important that they know how many posts that have been deleted,.so that they, and others can find the previously referenced posts.

Actually,.I thought you understood this, now when we have a member who behaves in this strange way.
But now he has only seven posts left to delete,.then hopefully is this madness over.

But as I said before,.the sad thing is,that many parts of the thread are now much harder to understand.
This when members respond to,.and comment on 255 posts that no longer exist.

:small_blue_diamond:I agree with you @frenchrooster,.that’s Exactly what Don does.
It would be nicer and better,.IF he contributed with any interesting experience in the subject-area of the thread.

:small_orange_diamond:No,.not quite correct from you Don…

:small_orange_diamond:Oh my God Don,.how long “will you hit yourself for your chest” (as we say in Sweden),because of this,.your suggestion.?

As I wrote earlier,.it would be more interesting,if you contribute with some interesting experiences on the subject of the thread.
Being negative towards others is not difficult,.contribute instead with something positive Don.

/Peder🙂

Back to the basics :joy:

Don is not the only person who has suggested that a summary would be useful, and I don’t understand how it is negative either to request one, nor is it negative for someone to feel, possibly, that they either have no relevant experience/conclusions that they feel they want to contribute, maybe simply wanting to learn from the thread.

What would be very useful I’m sure would be a listing of the different things evaluated, the different conclusions, positive, negative, neutral and changing and the range of different ancillary equipment and streamers/DACs associated with each conclusion. But of course no-one has the time to do that, and too many people haven’t identified key components, limiting the usefulness of their experience.

In the absence of full information, and of time to analyse all the contributions to tease out everything that is definitive, the summary @anon77199223 made back in December to which I added (currently post 4608 [link]) may be as good a summary as it is possible to make, though JimDog’s list needs adding to for some of the new things added since. Otherwise all anyone can do is search and hope to find some snippets relevant to them, but with well over 6000 posts that may not be very easy, which is a bit of a pity

Incidentally, currently a total of 506 posts have been deleted from this thread (this is nominally post 6939). IIRC some were deleted by our moderator, but not a huge number. @TiberioMagadino is clearly not the only deleter of posts, and eferences to posts by the number displayed alongside therefore would not be correct regardless of his personal choice. If references need to be fixed than it is better to do with direct links as I did in my last post.

61 to go.

Gentlemen, when these arguments constantly break out in this thread it is distracting, off-putting and entirely counter-productive.

If those being antagonised would just refrain from taking the bait, things might just keep on track.

That’s just my point Nigel. There is no track in this thread.
Hence the recommendation for a summary.

Cheers
Don

I just did a quick check on the definition of mania and it looks like the thread is entirely on track

Mania: An abnormally elevated mood state characterized by such symptoms as inappropriate elation, increased irritability, severe insomnia, grandiose notions, increased speed and/or volume of speech, disconnected and racing thoughts, increased sexual desire, markedly increased energy and activity level, poor judgment, and inappropriate social behaviour.

Mania is the Greek word for madness. It is derived from mainmai, to rave in anger. The Maniai in Greek mythology were the Furies who pursued those who had done unavenged crimes and drove them to madness

Deletions or posts?
If the latter then what about any further deletions?

I remember them well.

Of course, being one of the Nephelai I didn’t often encounter them in my line of work: painting the clouds yellow at dawn and dusk is lonely work.

:small_orange_diamond:Maybe you should read the post that Don started up with.
Otherwise,.I refer to my post below…

:small_orange_diamond:The only comment I have to this is,.most of them who write here is between 50-70+.
If you think it’s a normal behavior of such an older person,.to sit and delete all of their 262 posts.
Well,.then we definitely have different opinions on this issue.

You do not want to know how we would respond and act…
To such a deliberate action,.to try to destroy a thread on our three Swedish forums.
But if you have some imagination,.you’ll understand.
Otherwise,.I have no comments,but share NigelB’s view..Gentlemen etc,etc…

:heart:Ends with something nicer,.this beautiful weather we have had for a few weeks now.
So to devote yourself to the activity that you see the results of in the picture.
Yes it can only be described in one word…
Life-quality..!!!

• And yes,.this is the tastiest fish you can eat..!!!

/Peder🙂
