Ethernet Switch and Cables Mania

The quote line above is something I & others have repeated a few times; posts on how ethernet or switches sound need to include some info (in the post or in your profile) on the system details.

Interestingly, whatever is said, some forum members still believe that better or boutique switches/cables provide better data transfer.

BTW you asked about BNC cables on the ER forum. I have no experience (yet…) but there is a big comparative review on the Audiobacon site you may find helpful.

So why a clock added to a switch can improve the sound, if you conceive it can improve it? If it’s not the data, what explains that ?

No, it’s definitely not data. Obviously not. You wouldn’t otherwise be able to use the Internet and read this message.

As for the signal clocking , which among other things is what Cisco Catalyst switches and other pro brands do very well, @Simon-in-Suffolk provided a comprehensive and detailed answer several times. In fact, he answered that question a lot of times! What a patient person :slightly_smiling_face:

Interesting new avatar - as a small image on a phone I first thought it was a goat’s head, the real image only revealing itself on enlargement!

Simon often cited the noise shaping effect. But not the effect on the clock. The first time an additional clock was added here was very recently by a member. He added a sotm clock to the Etheregen.
And even if you and Simon know well the data professional world, its application and results and phenomenons in audio is still not completely known.
Other experts as DB for instance recognized not understanding all the streaming, switch, cables…interactions.

Hello Michaelb

Had the same problem with placings these ā€œaccessoriesā€ā€“maybe we should call the ā€œNecessitiesā€. I have enclosed a pic of what I did with my eR, using the rear post of the Fraim. Cost was cheap–just 3 rubber bands. Its accessible! and out of the way and not dangling in the air as I had it for some time. Perhaps one could do the same with the SOTM Clock. Got me thinking.

BTW: If you look carefully, you can see my Cisco 2960 tucked neatly, in vertical position, on the other side of the Frame, leaving the glass shelf for Nucleus+, Naim Core, and LPS’s. I put some soft rubber bumpers on the side of the Cisco, since its sensitive to microphonics according to this/other threads.

Very nice and compact. I specially went and got an extra Fraim shelf, initially for the NAS I no longer use, but found that it and then Nucleus and Cisco all sounded better away from the stacks, as does the EtherRegen, although it’s a little less fussy (the difference is subtler)…

I am a very new ndx2 owner. I have the simplest and cheapest network cables and gigabait switch, combined with the 30 € RCA cables to my Accuphase E 600 integrated amp. The sound is absolutely fantastic. Good I did not waste on the multi k€ cabling

Enjoy your new ndx2! You can come back to this later as I’m sure this thread will still be alive and active

Guys, if you go back severeal years when I kicked much of this off regarding RFI from network systems on audio, and subsequent noise from network switches, I pointed out the serial link clock stability (jitter) had an effect on the side bands introduced and the RF noise … at the time I believed the tolerance of the Catalyst clocks was down to the support of PTP … this I don’t think is the case now, but PTP does require a very tight serial clock.
One thing for sure none of this is particularly new, … clock stability is key to reduce noise power… a noisy clock driving a serial stream is like creating a FM transmitter with band of noise, which I believe I have tried to explain a few times on this and the previous forum.

Anyway the serial clock stability has nothing to do with data integrity unless extreme to the point of malfunction, just like the cleanliness of the mains is nothing to do with data integrity…

I first started working professionally with digital audio (and video) in the mid 90s… and I can say networking has changed quite a lot in that time. My first foray into digital audio and DACs was in the late 80s… so this all feels quite well trodden for me… but I appreciate for some they have only discovered this in the last few years.

With regard to RFI and it’s impact on high quality audio systems, I found a discussion with Dennis Morecroft several years ago fascinating and he introduced me to the area of low level intermodulation distortion and RF induced errors in feedback systems… he had been addressing RFI mitigation with his high end audio products for some time… and that proved very insightful with my later exploits with Naim and looking at the effects of noise from RFI and their mitigation’s from attached devices.

One of my longer term projects is to locate the Nucleus+, and the Core downstairs near the router. I would keep the eR upstairs in the listening room fed by a 4 meter Belden Catsnake. I rarely rip any cd’s anymore, don’t buy them with Roon available, and use it only for remote play. It requires modding the alcove box where the router is, so its on the list, right after preparing my tax documents for my Tax Acct. I will also feed the TV cable upstairs via a new RG58 for feed the new projector I just got.

Being sequestered at home at the moment, I may get to that project soon. I am in Mass in the US, and all non essential biz is closed. Right now we can go to grocery store, pharmacy, dump, and restaurants that do take out. No seating. Beaches closed. Roads are bare from tv shots. Bars are closed. Liquor stores are open. Schools all closed. Gas stations open. TGFAP–Thank God for Amazon Prime–slower than next day, but still operating.

I don’t think, believe, or imagine…just wondering. Anyway thanks for your reply…

A little off topic but out of curiosity is there a French version of this forum? Focal is a sister company.

Bark Bear posted an interesting explanation a few posts above.

Probably worth reading. He didn’t clain that what he said was definitely correct, but it was certainly helpful.

Also Simon has posted very clear explanations about data and noise shaping. Again, well worth re-reading.

No, unfortunately. There is a Naim french forum, but it’s different.
