This might be of interest to those that enjoyed Jools over the years - by Mark Cooper, the founding producer of the show. Thought a better home was here rather than the Books thread.
Haven’t watched for years but for me Souad Massi - 2005ish - alas no iPlayer recordings available.
She was so elegant, composed and ethereal voiced compared to the show ponies around her. She only got one song but made a real impression. Finally got to see her at the Barbican maybe the next year opening for (I think) Amadou & Mariam - held the audience spellbound.
Storming performance of Paranoid Android by Radiohead in 1997. Bought the album straight away and have loved it ever since
I much preferred the Maidstone studios filmed with the riff raff on the floor with the performers.
The newer series filmed in Ally Pally with the riff raff up on the rafters leaves me cold.
Entirely agree
I’m seeing her again at the Barbican in early May. Very much looking forward to it. And yes, I remember that performance too, Wonderful.
I went to BBCTV Centre in London in 2006 for a filming of Later as part of the audience. Great experience. Jools is deceptively short but was very nice and amenable and great with the audience. The artists were Scissor Sister (brilliant), The Good The Bad and The Queen (awful), Eric Bibb (great). Tony Bennet was edited in for the broadcast. Met Jake Shears on the way out. Interesting.
Pretty sure ‘Later with Jools..’ was the first time I saw/heard Amy Winehouse - I was hooked !!!
Don’t get much better than this. RIP Jimmy.
Looks like she’s got her clothes on for this one ![]()
That’s a real shame.
Have seen it live at both venues and enjoyed both. It has very much lapsed into formula - oh look another bland warbler from sarf London being portrayed as innovative/let’s have a chat at the piano - but there are still some shockingly great performances in every series. Despite the staid nature of the thing I am reluctant to be too critical as it is pretty much the only music programme left on TV.
I’d have to have a think about favourite performance. There has been a few, I really enjoy the show for the slightly random an eclectic it throws up.
one that springs to mind lately was:
Jacob Collier - Something Heavy.
Best mate of mines mum had just passed and it reminded me as music often does just how good it can be.
Great thread….
Cheers! LWJH has been so important in showing me new music and bands over the years
