Hi, yes I have found Roon Core works better (quicker) when you give it more memory to work with.
That’s for sure
This is probably slightly off topic, but I thought it worth a mention just in case, in the unlikely event, that anyone else on the forum uses a Zyxel NSA310 NAS. It’s a very modest single bay NAS that I’ve been using since 2012 with my then NDX. I’ve been interested in trying Qobuz with my current NDS and after reading some of the posts here regarding the Logitech Media Server (LMS), I found a package for LMS ready to install in the admin menu on the NSA310 (along side it’s native Twonky server). I installed LMS, along with a upnp plug-in, which was also ready to go and a copy of Squeezer as a controller on my android phone. After a bit of configuration it all seemed to work, both locally with from files on the NAS, as well a Qobuz. It’s fairly stable and on balance no less stable than I’ve found the naim app/NDS to be, just a slightly different set of glitches. So for the last three weeks I’ve been enjoying my free month on Qobuz, especially the hi-res content and will definitely switch from TIDAL when it’s time to pay. In fact I’ve very tempted to go for Sublime. If anyone would like any more details, please shout.
Does the hi res content on Qobuz sound much better for most tracks than Tidal 16/44?
Does anyone know of any other devices that have these types of software add-in options in their pre-installed software, i.e. LMS, and a upnp plug-in, and a copy of a play/control app such as Squeezer?
@DomTomLondon found similar in his Innuous Zen Mini.
I think so, quite a bit better, depending on the recording. If you can find a way of playing it that’s not too costly, then it’s definitely worth trying the month free trial.
Looks like an interesting media aggregator, but doesn’t really address a key part of what Roon is essentially about, which is a recording curator solution, so it’s not a competitor of that service.
It looks a more polished version and competitor of BubbleUPnPServer and similar.
Totally… often like chalk and cheese on a good system.
44.1/16 media on both Tidal and Qobuz for the same distribution masters sounds the same as it is the same. Unfortunately Tidal doesn’t do lossless Hidef… perhaps a licensing thing with the MQA people.
Qobuz simply has the hidef PCM distributions where released and available as an option.
If in doubt you can compare the 44.1/16 with the higher definition version on Qobuz or its MQA encoded format on Tidal to satisfy your curiosity.
Increasingly new media is distributed to Qobuz in a base resolution of 44.1/24 or 48/24… and slowly we are seeing the demise of 44.1/16. After all the early digital format of 32/16 is now effectively dead.
I have upgraded my virtual library to replace my local NAS 44.1/16 versions with high definition versions available streamed from Qobuz where available because of the increased musical enjoyment from such media.
It’s got to the point I have a shortlist of media I wish would be released in a higher definition than the legacy base resolution of 44.1/16 … because after a while you get used to higher definition, and rolling back to 44.1/16 sounds relatively flat or shut in until your brain adjusts.
Thanks Simon
And what’s the best way to feed Qobuz into my 272/555DR/150X/SL2s?
The ways I have on my long-list include:
Roon Nucleus
Roon on a NUC
Roon or LMS via an Innuous
Sonore upnp Bridge
Bluesound Node 2i
thanks
Jim
A couple of years ago I might have disagreed with this, based on listening to hi-res downloads which I thought were often extremely overpriced, and may or may not have sounded any good. Qobuz does seem to have done a better job though, as the 24 bit material I’ve listened to consistently sounds good. My CD purchase rate has dropped significantly as a result.
Yes your option is a Roon UPnP bridge of some sort or another with the legacy products - and its a slight compromise but will effectively UPnP push the data to the streamer.
An alternative without Roon is to use BubbleUPnPServer or equivalent - but although they sounded good on my legacy streamer it wasn’t always as reliable as I would have liked
Indeed - I think my history of early hidef was questionable as well. I do wonder how ‘official’ early hidef content was. Now its more mainstream it’s luckily a very different scenario in my experience.
And yes I do think the difference from 88.2 - 96/24 to 176.4 - 192/24 is very marginal
The Innuos servers would give you the choice of native Qobuz, or Qobuz via Roon, along with Tidal, local streaming, iRadio etc. The Zen Mini would work over SPDIF straight into the 272.
If I still had a legacy streamer, I would probably just go for the Sonore option and run Roon on a Mac or Nuc. If you already have a ripper, local music store and server, you don’t really need those features of the Innuos, although a Zen Mini is still a pretty cheap way to get up and running if you don’t already have the hardware required.
I don’t have a ripper (besides the CD drive on my aging laptop) or a local store/server/NAS.
Nor a digital library of music.
Ideally I’d like to hold off from creating a library and server to save on cost and hassle.
So it’s mainly about testing whether to switch from Tidal to Qobuz.
But if I had a Zen Mini I’d obviously try ripping a few of my CDs and see whether they sound good vs web streaming.
I’m in the same position as you Jim with no NAS or ripper.
Currently I’m using BubbleUPnP on my Android phone to access Qobuz and stream it via a Raspberry Pi.
Having looked at other solutions I’d like a player/streamer with Qobuz integrated and as I can’t afford a ND5XS2 or an Innuos I think I’ll get a Bluesound Node 2i which is plug and play really, plus I can add another DAC if needed in future.
I think the Innuous Zen Mini is not much more than a Bluesound Node 2i unless you get the power supply upgrade with it.
I can’t get an ND5XS2 as I’m wedded to a 272/555DR.
I tried a Bubble upnp software package on the laptop, but the laptop is wirelessly connected and so did not improve SQ in my system.
So I have a complex decision as I don’t really want to get Roon, but I can’t easily try it so it’s impossible to know whether I’d enjoy it.
I love the Naim app, but I want to try Qobuz.
It’s a puzzle I’ve been gnawing at for 2 years, while upgrading and really enjoying the on-going improvements in my system.
Would be quite nice if Naim updated the app so that we could use it with BubbleUPnP software and thereby have Qobuz to NDS and other legacy streamers all via the one app (without Roon)
Received the upnp bridge, 5 minutes to connect, start the Roon server on the Qnap … and I have Qobuz on the NDS … great tip from the forum!
That was quick, especially in these lockdown days!
Have fun, I’m still learning new things about Roon several months after taking out a sub, there’s lots of good stuff to get stuck into. Enjoy.
done it but using Linn App
