There seems to be a common theme running through those posts.
And even in my very small system - Naim powered by Naim ( nSats with Nait 2)
In the good old days - Linn powered by Naim
But it was a lot cheaper than a Lotus, and brought some of the performance for less cost.
However I’m not sure it is an appropriate analogy, given that speakers and amps are mostly from different manufacturers and all combinations are a personal balance of preferences.
I used to have Dynaudio underpowered by Naim, erm I’ll get my coat (ducks and runs for cover).
PMC powered by Musical Fidelity.( power amp ).
One of my systems, the one I left back in Blighty, is Naim powered by Rega, and very enjoyable too.
My hi -fi is powered by electricity
As for the new stores, if it introduces more people to Naim it can only be a good thing. When or if one opens in the UK and if I am passing by, I would definitely go and have a look.
Changing the subject but still connect to this new development, I am now waiting for the gnashing of teeth and wailing that will ensue when and if the classic range is updated with a new case design. I am old enough to recall the consternation from some when Chrome bumper became Olive.
Sorry to be a pedant but Selfridges is in Marylebone.
One side of Oxford street - the north - is in Marylebone - the south side is in Mayfair. So when you’re inside the store - yes - you’re in Marylebone - but you enter it from Mayfair…unless you go in the Duke Street entrance, or via the Food Hall (The Brass Rail ) from the Orchard Street side - or even you know the little way in the back from Edward’s Mews - in which case you’re in clinging on to the edge of Marylebone the whole time - I agree!
…Mayfair is just a bit more recognisable, and I was talking to a chap from Oz!
I think the tide has turned, Marylebone Village surely has a greater charm!
@MattCray @LindsayM Funnily enough, back in 1983-84 I used to live in Marylebone, and Selfridges was pretty much our corner shop, and Regent’s Park our back garden. It shows you how much London has changed – at the time Marylebone High Street was rather run down and undistinguished and not the chi-chi destination it is now, with only a Habitat shop, a very good ironmongers and a (then) famous Turkish restaurant called Topkapi offering a reason to go there. Even more incredibly, I was a student at the time – London’s property prices then were reasonably affordable! I was studying History of Art, and had to visit three different institutions – the Courtauld Institute (a short stroll to Portman Square), UCL (a pleasant walk across Regent’s Park) and Westfield College (hop on the 13 bus up to Kiddepore Avenue in NW3). Happy days!
Kevster - I was at UCL in that era, back when they had Beadles on the gates ! Agree that Marylebone wasn’t the greatest back then, although you did get anomalies like All Change Records having a specialist jazz outlet on Baker St (didn’t last). Those were the days !
My first proper watch came from Selfridges in 2001. ( Omega Seamaster ).
Always pop in an tour their watches now when in town. Not that I’ve done that recently.
With you on that one paulbysea I remember it like yesterday , I got it but never did like the olives
Living in Buckingham Marylebone is my route into London and use it regularly, and my daughter (youngest) went to UCL to. Over the last few years Marylebone station has been through a renaissance from the ghost town it was in the 60/70/80s and there was even a plan to close it. Eldest daughter when she first joined her current company used to commute into Marylebone and used to walk to her office in Belgravia. She often recounts something she used to see some mornings when this guy would come out of his house with his pug dog, which he would put in a small trailer on the back of bike and ride off!
Similarly, I was a student at the same time and lived for a year in South Kensington!
100% it does - Mayfair is not my cup of tea at all.
Marylebone High street doesn’t have the charm it once had though, just feels like anywhere else really. Apart from Daunt Books obviously…
Although it was behind scaffolding last time I was there. And has clearly been behind Covid for a lot longer than that.
I love Marylebone station - easily my favourite London terminus. I have friends/family in Solihull, Bicester and Rickmansworth so pre-Covid used the station and the Chilterns line quite a lot.
The site links to dealers. My dealer is the dealer linked here.
I used to do the same. I worked just off Lower Regent Street in the late 90s and when I fancied a stroll at lunch time would take a walk down Bond Street and look in the expensive watch shops (Marcus springs to mind with the crazy tourbillions) culminating in the Selfridges watch department. Bought the Oris BC3 and then like you the Omega Seamaster.
