Follow up on "Finally decided to service my 2002 NAP-500"

Well, after few months of waiting over the last 2 days I have finally had my 2001 NAP500 & PS serviced.

After considering sending the amp via carrier to LASA in Piacenza (Italy), I decided it was too dangerous, so I left Rome at 4,30 in the morning yesterday for a 550Km journey by car to meet Sandro, the Owner of LASA, that promised me to work for the entire day just on my kit to have it completed in one day. So he did and this morning, before heading back to Rome, we talked at length about the service and the 500’s architecture and why he reckons the 500 is such a wonderful machine. As NAIM suggests having a full service after 12/14 years, my kit has never been serviced since it was produced, so I am thrilled at the idea of listening to it after 24 years. Sandro has warned me not to pretend anything of the kit for at least 3–4 weeks, so this makes it even more interesting. I like Sandro, such a competent connoisseur of NAIM, it was a pleasure talking to him.

I will connect the kit tomorrow ad will write my toughs as time ticks.

I enclose some picture of the actual kit and its precious accumulated dust

What a labour of love for both of you. Dare we ask how it sounds at this early stage?

Thanks for sharing :smiling_face::+1::raising_hands:

Is it dust covering almost the entire PCB?

Will do so when is connected.

I’m not surprised with ventilation ports at the top and fans sucking air through it though  Just removing all that dust would make feel better

Great to see and then hear the benefits of a service after 24 years. Feed back what you hear as the dound develops. Were there any modifications undertaken or was it simply a change out of aged components such as caps?

Well, the whole kit is now installed. I was worried in case something would go wrong ;-), but then music is flowing again, and I am relieved.

The sound at the moment is somewhat “dull”, as I was told, but the character is there, so let’s give it time to run-in and get up to speed. We’ll see!

During the 500 service, did Sandro carry out the resistor lift modification?

I don’t know about this. Presumably he has done all that is required on the amp as instructed by NAIM.

Some traces soldering was done, this I know.

If he is Naim authorised I’m sure he would have followed the Naim 500 service sheet to the letter :+1:

Lovely - and jealous that you have such wonderful service point. Would have done the same bringing 500 over.
Had contact to Lasa some time ago because the 52 I bought from a nice guy from Italy had some issues with the Pot. Perfect people there!

Do you have no problems with the 500 getting warm?

Never had any issue with the 500 or PS getting hot, even though I had the amp/pre always on for years, which by the way Sandro told me it is not a very good idea.

Will be switching the kit on and off more often now!

He is a NAIM service authorized guy since 2013

Ok - fine.
Maybe the dr variant gets warmer. Mine is getting warm in medium Fraim rack. But only during summer under the roof - surprise
Mine is from 2017 - so some years left.
Had my 52 (not the Italian one) serviced in 2022 after 27 years - wow!

My 500DR runs fairly cool, probably the same temperature as the previous 500 none DR.

You have a large Fraim afair - and not under rooftop?. In the less warm months it’s also cool.
