Football Season 2023/24

I’d go for Alfredo Morelos who is on a free, can’t find a club due to indiscipline and wage demands, but will add viewers, and tonnes of goals vs the crocked striker. Youz can afford him.

I agree but, before commenting further, check out the comparative level of debt for those clubs you aspire to be both in the EPL and the Championship.

You are in fine fettle and that which you aspire to will kill you. You can just about sustain £60m debt to an extent you could never sustain £150m plus of debt. That’s what the “investment” you crave will buy you. No-one spends millions of their money. They leverage the assets of the club. Where those are less than the money needed that is debt loaded onto the club that one day needs to be repaid.

We all understand the pain of fandom but you really do need to grasp the basics of football finance. The risk for Norwich is not lack of investment or “debt”as we call it. It’s the continual appointing of poor managers. One bad season and you’re in league one unable to service your “investment” and heading into administration. Your owners don’t need to put more money in. They need to build up your revenue bases.

Effectively the thing you want because it gets rid of that which you don’t like will kill your club. Fans with a grasp of football finance understand this. Talk to fans of Bolton, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Barnsley, Charlton, Oxford United, Stockport, Notts County, Bury and Wigan Athletic. They’ve all been where you are. They chose “investment” rather than cutting their cloth and have all spent longer in the lower leagues than they ever did in the EPL. I wonder if they’d do it again.

Farke was an excellent manager and if he’d had the backing of a capable owner he’d have succeeded at Norwich.
Owners have to be capable of providing considerable short term finance in order to establish a club in the higher leagues. The pay back maybe failure and loss but this is the reality of top league football.
Delia took over a team at that had played top flight football for the previous decade, qualified for Europe and held substantial land assets.
Twenty six years later the club is clinging on to the championship, the land assets have gone and there is a £60 million shortfall which she cannot facilitate.
For years she told us nobody was interested in taking the club over but at the AGM the FD admitted they receive frequent offers and these are filtered and the viable ones presented to the board for consideration.
There’s nothing stable about our current situation and from a business point of view new owners are long overdue in order to reverse our continued decline.

Maybe we need a separate thread on Norwich City’s finances.

I sense your frustration with Norwich City’s ownership John, and I hope you get the changes you wish. As a retired corporate banker I’ve just had a quick look at the latest Accounts. Mike is right in saying that things could be worse, financially, but it probably doesn’t feel that way.

Wrexham, on the other hand, with a negative net worth, are technically insolvent, but as we all know, football finances work in a different way to usual business practices…

Andy I would agree with your observations. I think after 26 years of getting nowhere fast we fans would like to see somebody else given a chance.
Once the parachute payments stop we all fear for the consequences.
It’s not an ideal situation but football is now a Billionaire’s hobby.

Keep banging that drum John. Ain’t nobody listening least of all Delia. Will be interesting to see whether Leeds fans share your interesting views on Farke.

Plenty of fans are. The majority I sit with would welcome new owners.
The local fans site has swung to a majority of posters in favour of change.
As the financial situation becomes worse Delia may not have any options as her self funding model is dead in the water.

My season ticket for Elland Road arrived yesterday. I’m looking forward to 23/4 - 22/3 was always going to be another disappointment given Marsch & Orta. Thankfully both gone. I’ve no idea what to expect but I’m happy with Farke’s appointment. There was nobody at the club capable of spotting a rising managerial star so we were always going to be shopping in the returns bin. In there Farke looks as good as it gets. Time will tell but at least he’s started by getting the players properly fit, something Marsch failed to do. We were blowing by the 2nd half of every game. I doubt Farke’s the new Bielsa but talent & morality on that scale is pretty much irreplaceable at our level.

If he can get the players to handle basic defending, he’d be doing better than St. Marcelo. But Farke’s record in that area isn’t inspiring.

You can’t build a strong house without a solid foundation, as we old farts are always quick to remind our bored audience.

If winning at any cost is a priority Bielsa’s not your man. As a ‘clean sheet is the holy grail’ bloke Bielsa still won my heart & we’ll not see his like again at ER in my lifetime for sure. Orta sold him short tbf, overpaying for poor defenders (& the rest). We’ll see what Farke offers. Norwich played good football. At least we’ve moved Marsch’s picks on (expect Adams to leave when/if fit). None of them will be missed.

Farke was handicapped by a cash strapped Delia.
Despite this he produced the best football I’ve seen at Norwich during nearly 60 years of supporting them.
It can be a bit like the footballing equivalent of Bazball but it’s wonderful entertainment and he is a genuine and intelligent man.
I’d have him back in an instant.

I’m happy with Farke & the fan base in general seems comfortable too. We know he’s inherited problems.

I’d like Norwich promoted if only to have the get Delia out conversation moved to @Bobthebuilder ’s Arsenal vs the rest thread.

Don’t take it personally, @JohnF. My folks used to live in Fakenham, and I’ve been to (and enjoyed) games at Carrow Road. However, I think I’ve learned all I need to know about Delia and NCFC finances (at least until something changes). Enjoy the season.

Watch yourself you’ve not only committed the sin of mentioning a PL team but also the double whammy of a London based one, careful now.
