From my understanding, for optimum performance both blades need to be sharpened (even the rear face of the main cutting blade and the opposing blade). If you look carefully at the design of the Tobisho A-Type you may notice that there is a slight chamfer that is conducive to the overall precision of the cut
From my understanding the video shows a ~200 grit Okatsune whetstone used for hand sharpening which could be considered imprecise compared to a jig that can be used to hone the edge more precisely. You may like to have a look at this video from Tormek:
No Richard, it belongs to the arborist company. I can do a little easy tree work but I know when to hand over to the professionals!
He was operating in a confined space of a few meters between the tree and my telephone cable and more importantly electric mains cable! At one point the boom was rubbing against the telephone cable.
Last week a fellow arborist that they know was killed doing a similar job near by when he cut a mains cable. It was fresh on their minds today so they were all a little apprehensive, so total respect!

In the spirit of experimentation, I fetched a pair of secateurs that I keep in the car for cutting stems when taking flowers to the cemetery.
Apart from wiping with a tissue after use they have no maintenance.
They cut paper!
Not bad for something costing £4.99, made in India.
They are not designed to cut paper, but it is a demonstration of how a good edge can do. It is a bit like the demonstrator who makes stool legs on a lathe with an axe. He is showing that getting the relationship of cutting edge to wood is important, not that the axe is the tool for the job.
Iām glad youāve managed to cut through paper. In the photo below you should see that I have also managed to cut through a cigarette paper and tissue paper (I think the latter is thinner than the former). You may need to sharpen them more
Some tools just work for me and this Kent & Stowe 3 pronged hand cultivator is just perfect for untangling roots when repotting. Nice small size of 21cm gives me a nimble tool without causing unnecessary leverage hand stress. The middle prong is a little protruding if I want to selectively use it on a small area. Stainless steel too. There are pics of the same tool with flattened tips, but this round ended version is better and I do prefer 3 to 2 prongs.
Nice to see if anyone uses something Japanesey and/or ridiculously expensive I can waste my money on, but this is hard to beat for me.
Unfortunately not. Just hanging bare in the average garden centre. It would be nice to waste money on something with red & yellow handles with Japanese writing stamped into the metal.
Aha, maybe you would appreciate the Dieter Schmid Fine Tools website. Iām sure you could find something you like across what is a very nice selection of tools
I would post a link but something is preventing thisā¦
The petrol lawnmower finally died. Having other Husqvarna battery garden tools with batteries and charger I decided on the Husqvarna LC 353iVX model which can take two batteries. The battery pictured is a 4.2 aH version which i have had for 8 years, the other I have is 7 years old. It is self propelled and made short work of our lawn yesterday, and did not need the second battery. Quite happy with this, and very quiet as well.
No i gave up with trying to rotate the picsā¦ā¦.one posted OK, the battery rotated. First try both rotatedā¦ā¦so rotated and saved on ipad, posted they came out as saved on ipadā¦ā¦rotated. Have asked @Richard.Dane if there is any news on this, it seems random.
Gazza, it seems to be an issue with iOS and discourse re. Stripping of metadata. My iPhone is fine but had issues previously. A work around is to do a small edit to the image such as a crop before posting.
