Surely it’s the Smiths through a 272…
Indeed. Musicians either make music for money (e.g. aiming to get that next hit single or in Mozart’s day to meet the commission), or they make it because it is a creative force in their heads, and when a group of musicians gel the play off each other makes that latter drive expand. Most musicians need to make money from their music, so the purely artistic drive only feeds them if it happens to be what people like and will pay for it.
Like with classical music only after death popularity polls matter. So let’s see where Genesis stands in 150 years from now…, assuming the forum would still exist in some form, and some ancient librarian would revive the discussion…
The discussion will be drowned out by the thread on when the 272-19 is coming.
Pink Floyd - definitely!
No - wait a minute - The Rolling Stones!
Oh $%(^ - Led Zeppelin of course!
Damn - The Allman Brothers Band!
*^"$! - …
When I drew up this list, it had grown to 30 odd, but I’ve spared you the rest.
Genesis hasn’t appeared yet - not even remotely on the Horizon.
Of course, it’s all just a matter of personal taste. I know many people with musical tastes similar to mine who really like Genesis. I just find their music, and the music of individual band members to be a little boring - with the exception of a couple of Peter Gabriel albums.
That’s a very strange ‘ilk’ indeed!
In fact, just about as far from being an ilk as I can think of, unless maybe slip in Doris Day as well.
You’re dead right there.
If I could chose 100 albums from any artist, I wouldn’t take any Floyd, Stones or Zep.
However, if I could choose only one artist it would be Todd Rundgren. Besides being a musical genious, his music output isn’t confined to one style or genre.
That’s why he gets the nod over Shakatak. ![]()
I’ve never really been a fan of Genesis or Roxy Music but if it floats your boat then please enjoy
The best thing you can say about Shakatak is that at least they’re not Ed Sheeran
This thread has fully cemented the reasoning behind not having a forum dislike button.
The others are important in the history of UK popular music. This is a generalisation only, one of the best sources is Rock Family Trees https://rockfamilytrees.co.uk/ and of course Wikipedia.
Alexis Korner was amongst others responsible for the coming together and cross over of jazz, blues and skiffle. His band was constantly changing and included people who would go on to the Stones, Cream, Colosseum and many others.
John Mayall played with him, form his own band from which followed Cream, but also Fleetwood Mac, Keef Hartley and others.
There are links to The Yardbirds, which gives you Jeff Beck. Here there are songwriting links with Graham Gouldman, later of 10CC.
Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention again generalizing, were responsible for folk rock in the UK, recognisable names Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny…
Sky was perhaps a strange mix, publicity wise, centred around classical guitarist John William’s. They included many session musicians, notably Herbie Flowers, responsible for the bass line in Walk On The Wild Side, also playing in Blue Mink and T.Rex. Another member, Francis Monkman, founder member of Curved Air.
You’re misinterpreting I think - it was a general comment not specifically about Genesis or anything else.
Of course it is a matter of personal taste. When I was at school in the late 70’s it was a binary choice, Genesis. Pink Floyd, Led Zep or the opposition, punk. You “weren’t allowed” to like both, it was very tribal. I fell into the former camp and think that Genesis are a fine band up until and including Duke. But interestingly the post Duke times were their most commercially successful. “The Lamb lies down” is their finest work ihmo. With “Trick of the tail” coming in second. Yes the lyrics are often downright bizzare, but something about them ticks all the boxes for me.
They’re all acclaimed as “accomplished musicians,” and they’re all putrid, for one reason or another.
Eric Clapton used to help a boy at my school with learning guitar. From what I heard he was really nice. I would lump him in with those others really.
The trouble with threads like this is that the negativity can become wearing. Many many people love Genesis, Queen etc. I can’t say I do, but if I put forward say Gang of Four or Durutti Column as ‘best’ band I’d be shouted down by those who think they are rubbish.
As has been said ‘best’ is not a concept that can be legitimately applied to art forms. ‘Favourite’ is entirely different. I think prog is the lowest form of musical life and cannot abide. It’s a bit of fun to say that ELP are crap but ultimately it gets none of us anywhere.
I’m listing to some Bach at the moment. Maybe he is the BEST COMPOSER EVER. He’s certainly my favourite.
Clapton’s vile rant about “Enoch,” for which he has never truly apologised, disqualifies him for me. And his music is the very definition of dull.
However, point taken about negativity.
Now, our music tastes in other areas may be very different, but I definitely agree with you on this one!
Which one. ![]()
There is only one Johann Sebastian!
