“self indulgence”???
reminds me of the scene in AMADEUS where the emperor tells
Mozart: “too many notes”

something not being your “thing” really has nothing to do
with that thing being the best or not
“accomplished musicians” is only one of the criteria i used and only 3rd in the list
Are you referring to Shakatak or Genisis?
Magic this thread away😅
I’m getting a bit concerned that you might actually believe that your set of criteria actually proves something verifiable.
Shak
Or Phil Collins singer Genesis…
(Though latter weren’t that bad, just lost the magic)
I rest my case m’lud!
Just like that!
I’m sure this is supposed to be fun and games. I’ve never Heard of Shakattic , they sound very derivative. Genesis good band but certainly didn’t really do anything new in Prog. Jethro Tull, very unique great musicianship and story telling. The Beatles of set the course of rock and roll they did things no one had done before due in large part from George Martin. From Help onward no one did it better, a class of 1.
And being funk or whatever they may be described as, I’m unlikely to listen to any!
Thanks for the suggestion (although I’m in the US). I’ll try to track that down.
Applying most of the criteria far more outstanding for my taste
Sky
Steeleye Span
Fairport Convention
Alexis Korner Blues Incorporated
John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers
Not only musical, but influential
In fairness I think Genesis were influential.
And don’t forget Yes, even more self indulgent…
Not sure I understand what is meant by ‘self-indulgent’ when applying the description critically to musicians. You can hardly claim a lack of commercial success for either Genesis or Yes, therefore they must have been producing music an awful lot of fans enjoyed listening to. If this happened to coincide with the artists doing exactly what they wanted to musically, where’s the problem?
I like John Mayall. Don’t know the others.
Hi, not really a problem, I am a yes fan since early 70’s saw them live in the big Apple Brighton (regent ballroom)and in ice stadium stockholm, have a few albums and Steve Howe is my guitar hero, however for me IMO some of their tracks tend to go on a bit…
Rarely listen to any Prog these days, mostly Jazz now in my old age
I saw Yes at Wembley. Great musicians but Jon Anderson’s voice wasn’t for me. Also Rick Wakeman flying around Wembley performing something or other on ice. Now that was ridiculous.
