Geraint is 38 years old on Saturday, there are only 3 riders in this Giro older.
He’s still got a lot of form albeit on the wane and up against an impressive younger brood coming though. The ability of some of these brand new young debutants is impressive.

Stage 16 produced a change of jersey -
Christian Scaroni becomes the new borrower of Tadej’s Maglia Azzurra
Three hard going races in one today, the KOM battle will focus especially on the first half of the course to claim points atop of Passo Rolle, the stage hunters will try to escape getting caught and take a stage win, and the GC battle for what is most probably for a 2nd and 3rd place on the podium.
The KOM battle had a good shake-up on Stage 17, the Maglia Bianca borrower Christian Scaroni only gaining 6 points on the 2nd cat Passo Brocon, and Simon Geschke didn’t make the breakaway so nil KOM points.
The main benefactors were Steinhauser - probably more concerned with winning the stage but accumulating KOM points on every climb along the way to total 86 which moves him up into 3rd place, Quintana also scored 49 KOM points before fading away later in the stage, but the most impressive KOM score came from Giulio Pellizzari (Ita) VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè who came 1st, 1st, and 3rd on the first three climbs to total 92 points and which places him into 2nd Mountain Classification position behind Pogačar who now leads with 82 points ahead. Pellizzari will becomes the next new Maglia Bianca borrower tomorrow.
Steinhauser’s Stage 17 win inadvertently helped Pellizzari by preventing Pogačar’s 2nd place gaining the full fat 50 KOM point for a stage win, although Pogačar accumulated 30 KOM points during Stage 17 the points gap is closing and there remains a chance the Maglia Azzurra can be taken from him before Rome.
With a hilly first half it’s a dead cert a break will go, but it will need to outrun the sprint trains as they home in on Padova.
Lidl-Trek are lucky to have all 8 members of their team remaining and focused on gaining another stage sprint win.

A close shave win for Tim Merlier, his 2nd stage win in this Tour after also winning Stage 3.
The finish results caused some positional reshuffling in the Points Classification:
POINTS CLASSIFICATION AFTER STAGE 18
Jonathan Milan (Ita) Lidl-Trek, 327 pts
Kaden Groves (Aus) Alpecin Deceuninck, 200 pts
Tim Merlier (Bel) Soudal Quick-Step, 143 pts up 3 places

Julian Alaphilippe (Fra) Soudal Quick-Step, 113pts down 2 places
Tadej Pogacar (Slo) UAE Emirates, 111pts down 2 places
Today is a shorter stage with climbs not over difficult which usually means an explosive start producing a sizeable breakaway of hopeful stage hunters gunning for it.
But today has unpredictably; will the KOM and GC climbers keep their powder dry for tomorrow’s taxing two times ride up Monte Grappa?

Stage 19
A score of riders in a breakaway succeeded in staying away to the finish gaining 15+ minutes on the main GC peloton.
However, none in the breakaway were any threat to the GC, and the GC contenders basically opted for an easy ride to save it for tomorrow’s tough mountain stage.
Meanwhile, yet another KOM jersey change - Georg Steinhauser in the breakaway challenged the three KOM category climbs with scoring a 2nd, 1st, and a 3rd to total 23 points collected and which gains him 2nd position (behind Pogačar), and in doing so will (borrow) wear the Maglia Azzurra tomorrow. His attempt to try win today’s stage got him a 3rd place but this may have cost him energy for tomorrow.
Realistically, Tadej Pogačar has enough KOM points to be 99.9% certain to win the classification in Rome on Sunday, but the battle for 2nd and 3rd place is very tight between Steinhauser and 3rd place Giulio Pellizzari who lags only 5 points behind but will have far fresher legs for tomorrow.
A similar situation exists with the GC, Tadej Pogačar is obviously the clear winner but the fight for 2nd and 3rd podium positions is going to rage tomorrow, expect attacks, deviosity and skulduggery on a conclusive Stage 20.
In the 2014 Giro this climb was used for a 26.8km individual time trial, and was won by Nairo Quintana.
He also won the Giro Maglia Rosa outright that year + Maglia Bianca.
He will have fond memories of this climb and know it well.
He also had a very easy day yesterday, we will have to keep an eye on him today
