Guru Audio, Guru 12 - any real experience?

Sounds not the single case.

As said earlier I would based on what I can see on Swedish pages showing company information avoid this company. There is no company details more to than a phone nr and an email on their official web. The guy this phone nr goes to have had a business that went bust 2023-06-13 due to

Reason for deregistration
Lack of accounting/payment

It’s a one man show which is owned by Peopleaudio AB which adress is a privat home adress in Stockholm and they had a revenue of 64 000 EUR in 2023 with 30 000EUR in assets. If you are willing to take risks then sure but I would not put my money or trust into it.

Comments also show up on swedish forums with similar complaints as here and it goes years back. I dont think Guru is some kind bad guys, I met one of them who was very nice and really knew his stuff on speakers, but they seem to naively trying to run an international operation lacking the needed funding.

Thanks @Adam1. I dont think that Erik is a bad guy, but its pretty clear that he’s struggling to run Guru as a business, or at least isnt prioritising this type of work.

I can give some latitude for being a small business, but the only time I’ve had worse customer service is when a company has gone out of business and I was contacted by liquidators.

Hi Tom, no I totally agree, my two experiences of Erik have been.

  1. Enquiring about the Guru 12’s, agreeing to buy a pair, him shipping them and everything being delivered ahead of schedule and the minimum of fuss. The speakers are brilliant and built upon everything I had previously experienced in owning two pairs of QM10’s for many years (bought via my local dealer, Tom Tom Audio).
  2. Then getting my remaining pair of QM10’s upgraded to current spec as one of the speakers had failed (probably 13 years old at least) and I enquired if there was any repair capability and this is what Erik offered (at completely minimal costs. Sent them back at end of June, Erik said all done at beginning of August and would ship around 19th August.

Now in a phase of silence, which has happened before, in between have had comms about future developments etc at Guru.

So it is a head and heart type of situation, the 12’s I bought I could not be happier with, utterly brilliant, and I’d love to consider buying other speakers down the line from him, but it is fraught with the potential for this type of variation. I also put a colleague in touch with him (my CEO), who bought a pair of G28’s, he absolutely loves them, but it was a bumpy road to get confirmed delivery dates etc.

Its a shame.

Adam,

Wanted to check if you had any luck directly with Erik. He isnt even responding to me any more, so I’d be surprised if the business is active anymore.

Thanks

Hey Tom, organising a call with him this week, just got some work pieces in front of it at the moment but he texted me this weekend to say this week works, will let you know.

Cheers
adam

Thanks Adam

No worries, we are literally in the same boat. I see loads of posts on this site asking on speaker recommendations and would love to be able to put these forward but can’t currently as the customer experience is too varied. My 12’s are brilliant, my QM10’s MIA.

Hi Tom, I think there is a way that @Richard.Dane can share email addresses, if you are ok with that shall we do that as just aware its stuff that probably better suited to a less public medium.

Yes, that would be preferrable. Thanks

Quick update here is that Erik has sent me a pic of my speakers being run through post upgrade testing from mk1 status to latest spec (mk 3 I think).

So I’m hopeful I may have them back before Christmas.

Tom has also received back what I believe is a replacement pair for his.

Erik isn’t quick, he is poor on comms but in my experiences there is absolutely nothing shady going on, if anything a guy that tries to be helpful but is overwhelmed with balancing everything.

Hopefully I’ll be able to post pics once I get them back, here they are in testing (drive unit surrounds still to be fitted).

Anyone compared with ATC Scm 11 ?

Similar prices on the second hand market. I have 11’s with an Atom and I have read others have gurus with an Atom - both pairings get positive reviews.

Maybe have a chat with James at Tom Tom as stockist of both brands

Gary

Thank you, i’m asking since a few weeks ago i demoed Scm 11, 50 active and passive at my friend Antonio in Pisa and i’ve been mesmerized especially by his own home system with Active 50s

If you like the ATC “sound” then I suspect all ATC speakers will be to your liking.
I have 11’s and 40actives (had some passive 20’s on home demo but prefer active) and will now try the 50actives to replace my 40actives - it will just be a case of if my room can handle them and if they can’t I will go 20 active towers.

As I said I prefer active but a good source is needed to get the most out of ATC.

My counsel would be do the demo thing but get a sense on if you prefer active v passive. (Active can be cheaper then power amp + speakers)

It’s been a while since I heard an ATC but wouldn’t say that Guru have same sort of presentation.

ATC from memory a dryer more analytical presentation and Guru fruitier and project forward rather than back.

Probably describing it all wrong but they are quite different in style in my experience.

Maybe Guru have more in common with Neat from what I’ve heard.

Yes, on the other hand, i never had the opportunity to see a Guru in the flesh, let alone listening them.

I have listened to both, although my time with ATC was several years earlier. My summary would be close to the on from @Adam1 . The Guru11 reminded me of some designs from the eighties and nineties, not as balanced as most modern speakers, but with some spectacular strengths and noticeable weaknesses. To my ears they were preferable to the Dynaudio Special 40. Unlike the ATCs, they worked well at lower volumes. Judging from a post by KJC in the “Pics from the listening position” thread, this still seems to be true for current ATCs.

Just got word today that my QM10’s are on their way back home  , looking forward to getting them back and give them a run on the new MF A1 amp.
